General Description:  The major function of the Training Support III is to perform responsible work involving the training of new hires, supervision and organization of Level II and Level III training for fire rescue personnel and EMS training necessary in compliance with all departmental policies and procedures and ensuring medical quality and protocol compliance of the department's employees.  Employees in this classification function as Training Instructors, responsible for the creation of career development materials, job proficiency training, and providing training in new techniques, equipment, and procedures. Objective is to ensure the general welfare and safety of fire crews and the general public.  The Training Support III may assume positions (e.g. Safety Officer) as assigned by Training Officer during live training evolutions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Training Officer and is a forty (40) hour per week position.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Develops, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates overall Department Training Program including all Fire, EMS, Rescue, and Special Operation Training according to departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and clearly in both oral and written form.
  • Identifies training needs, researches and prepares lesson plans, power point presentations and handout materials.
  • Conducts classes in fire and EMS related subjects.
  • Maintains required teaching certifications.
  • Ensures training records and certifications of personnel are recorded and kept current through on-line learning management system (LMS).
  • Supports supervisor in planning, organizing and implementing department goals and objectives; coordinates and integrates all activities toward achievement of established goals and objectives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively train and supervise a staff comprised of professionals engaged in carrying out fire suppression, EMS, hazardous materials, and special operations functions.
  • Thorough knowledge of current principles and practices of fire rescue and paramedic work, governing laws, ordinances, and policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand, follow, direct, and supervise written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental staff, supervisors and the general public.
  • Ability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to personal computer, calculator, copier, fax machine.
  • Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications including Microsoft Office, LMS, Staffing Solutions and MUNIS.
  • Ability to read, update maintain various records and files.
  • Ability to lead subordinates effectively and maintain discipline; exercise sound judgment; promote harmony and to cooperate with other agencies.
  • Knowledge of the strategy and tactics of handling fire, rescue, and medical emergencies and the ability to analyze and respond effectively under stress.
  • Ability to motivate people and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Considerable knowledge of and skill in the operations and maintenance of the various types of apparatus and equipment used in firefighting and EMS activities.

Minimum Requirements:

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively using speaking, hearing, writing and vision skills.  Must meet physical requirements for State Firefighter Certification. Position requires ability to reach, climb, pull, push, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, jump, run and drive without restrictions/limitations.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.  An Associate degree in Fire, EMS, teaching, or management preferred, (but not required).  Education must be supplemented by either advanced level course work in modern methods of firefighting, fire control, and company officer leadership. Preferred instructional credentialing in ACLS, BTLS/PHTLS, PALS and completion of other training programs as set forth by the Department and regulations.  

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: Must have and maintain a valid Florida driver's license. Must possess a current State of Florida Certificate of Compliance as a Firefighter and State of Florida certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic Preferred).  Must have or obtain and maintain a State of Florida Fire Instructor certification within six months, and must have or obtain and maintain within one year a CPR instructor certification.

Qualified applicants selected for this position will be required to obtain the following certifications and trainings within 18 months. A condition of employment will be required. Failure to complete all the certifications and trainings will result in the individual returning to their previous rank and position
