DESCRIPTION

The Nez Perce Soil and Water Conservation District (District) is based in Culdesac, Idaho with work locations throughout Nez Perce County and surrounding areas.  The field coordinator position is a temporary, seasonal position without benefits. Final employment start and end dates have not been identified but will most likely will be from between May 20th to June 5th to start and August 15th to 26th to end.  Work hours (start times, hours per day, day per week worked) will vary from week to week and are based on team needs, weather, vegetative growth stages and work load.  This means that no set scheduled is determined; employee is irregularly scheduled to work.

 

The field coordinator will lead the field crews in implementing habitat restoration efforts including riparian vegetation management, weed control, field inventory, stream survey and in-stream wood project installation.  The field coordinator will supervise and coordinate the day to day activities of the field crew as well as perform field restoration activities.   Communications, documentation and coordination skills are essential to this position.

 

Weed control, weed inventory and vegetative planting maintenance work is estimated to be 40-90% of the planned work for the field season.  Weed related work may include injecting knotweed, spot spraying, directing labor, weed eating, running and maintaining irrigation site maintenance, documenting planting success, scheduling labor, work inspections, work certifications to meet standards and design criteria, field site evaluations, development of maintenance plans, oversight and supervision of weed control teams, documentation of field activities and coordination with land owners.

Other duties as assigned are estimated to be 5 to 10% of the workload for this position.  Other duties includes tasks assigned by the district or operations manager on an as-needed basis and may include both field and office duties.

 

Skills testing and minimum task certifications will be evaluated throughout the employment period.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

The following minimum qualifications are required:

  1. Excellent organizational skills
  2. Ability to meet deadlines and attend work as scheduled
  3. Ability to follow instructions and procedures
  4. Ability to carry out office tasks such as copying, filing, computer work, climb stairs.
  5. Ability to operate weed control equipment including but not limited to shovels, hoe-dads, weed eaters, back pack sprayers
  6. Ability to meet documentation requirements, provide daily and weekly status reports, take field notes in a legible and neat manner.
  7. Ability to direct others, supervise work teams, coordinate schedules, provide training
  8. U.S. Drivers license and an insurable driving record.
  9. Ability to apply herbicides at specified rates, ability to mix herbicides as specified and perform mathematical calculations
  10. Ability to operate ATV, 4 wheel drive vehicles with manual transmissions, tow trailers
  11. Ability to walk over rough terrain in inclement weather packing 50 pounds.  The majority of work tasks are performed outdoors.  This requires the ability to daily work outdoors, in inclement weather, on rough terrain and packing field equipment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Two seasons of field experience.
  2. Supervisory Experience.
  3. Herbicide applicators license
  4. Background in agriculture.
  5. Demonstrated competence with ArcView GIS software.
  6. College or professional level classes in plant science, crop science, soils, agronomy, weeds or related field.
  7. ATV safety certification
