INTERN – NUTRITION

(Temporary In Person, Full-Time/40 hrs wk or Part-Time/20 hrs wk, June 9th through/up to August 8th, 2025)

Salary Information:       A07- $2,550.00/MO (FT); $1,275.00/MO (PT).

WHO ARE WE

The Texas Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Division administers 12 federal child and special nutrition programs and more than $2.5 billion in federal money annually. These programs aim to reduce hunger, encourage strong nutrition, and support local economies across Texas.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Intern for Food & Nutrition (F&N) will provide assistance for the nutrition education and outreach initiative. You will work under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with identifying tactics, create resources and training to support schools in meal standard compliance for related child nutrition programs. 

Assist Nutrition Grants Specialists with tracking, drafting surveys and developing plans for grant activities, as needed.

Support yearly conferences by attending and managing nutrition booths, educating attendees on nutrition topic(s) of interest with examples and case questions.

Assist Nutrition Specialists in the creation and distribution of resources related to the USDA Final Rule - Child Nutrition Programs: Meal Patterns Consistent With the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. 

Work closely with Nutrition Specialists to learn about the Farm to Early Care and Education Nutrition and assist in the creation of training for childcare centers.

Assist with drafting content to enhance F&N webpages across nutrition programs. Work closely with communications specialists to update nutrition pages on SquareMeals.org and track site visits, as needed.

Assist with independent research projects and analysis on a variety of topics, as assigned.

Follow all TDA policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications - External

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

Enrollment in a college, university, or graduate program or a recent graduate with a minimum grade point average of 3.0*. 

Completion of at least 60 credit hours*.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Coursework and/or experience in nutrition, food service management and/or culinary skills.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of office procedures; of spelling, punctuation, and grammar; and of business or program terminology, methods, and procedures. 

Skill in the use of a computer and office equipment; and providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers. 

Ability to prepare and maintain records, files, and reports; to transfer stock from one location to another; and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and exercise sound judgment and discretion.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer and may require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed. May involve travel, occasionally overnight (up to 5%).
