Survey Technician I or II

Job Summary

Make an impact:
The City of Salem has an immediate opening for a full-time Survey Technician I or II.  The successful candidate will join a surveying field crew supporting the Crew Chief and the City Surveyor completing City Improvement projects and other survey-related tasks.  Occasional independent work as a one-person field crew may be required.  This position can be filled as a Survey Technician I or II depending on the selected candidate’s experience.

What you will do:
The ideal candidate will be a responsible individual with excellent organizational skills, who is thorough, attentive to detail, and committed to maintaining a safe work environment. They should be capable of working independently and taking initiative. This role involves daily interaction with both the general public and city staff, effective and respectful communication is essential for success.

Additional information on job responsibilities: 
 

  • Operate Trimble survey technology and equipment to perform various land survey projects.
  • Collaborate and communicate with supervisor or designee to coordinate field operations.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate notes, records, sketches, and pictures that clearly describe the work performed.
  • Perform post process and manage electronic data.
  • Maintain field equipment and organization of supplies.
  • Report directly to the field crew chief for assignment direction, performance updates, and project coordination.

Compensation range for Survey Technician I 03.A15: $24.52 - $29.72 hourly, AFSCME Represented
Compensation range for Survey Technician II 03.A20: $29.72 - $36.18 hourly, AFSCME Represented

What are the minimum qualifications?
Survey Technician I (Engineering Technician I):
 

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Possess an Oregon Driver’s license and be able to meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • High school graduate or G.E.D. or one year of demonstrated progressive field experience in the area of assignment, or any combination of experience, education, or training which provides the following knowledge and abilities to work in land surveying.
  • One to four years of progressive land survey field experience is preferred.

Survey Technician II (Engineering Technician II):
 

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Possess an Oregon Driver license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Associate's degree with major course work in engineering or mathematics, and two years of experience in performing engineering and drafting tasks, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Certification as a Certified Survey Technician II may substitute for the education requirement as long as the minimum work experience (four years) exists.

Certifications in field desirable (Not required to apply):
 

  • Certification as a Certified Survey Technician II, LSI (Land Surveyor Intern), and/or EI/EIT (Engineer Intern/Engineer-in-Training).


What will you bring along?
 

  • Knowledge of various surveying methods, including geodetic, topographic, and boundary surveys, to ensure precise data capture and compliance with project requirements;
  • Experience operating and maintaining various surveying instruments, including total stations and GPS equipment, in the role of Instrument Person for precise field data capture;
  • Knowledge in processing and analyzing survey data, converting raw measurements into usable maps, and integrating them into CAD software;
  • Experience conducting boundary and ROW surveys, providing critical data for property lines, easements, and legal descriptions;
  • Experience performing topographic mapping surveys to gather elevation data and landscape features for design and construction purposes;
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D for drafting, designing, and modeling topographic data and construction plans;
  • Experience using specialized mapping tools such as laser scanning devices, drones, and other advanced surveying technologies for accurate data collection;
  • Knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and best practices in survey methods to ensure compliance with legal and technical specifications;
  • Effective communication skills.
