Lateral officers start on an enhanced pay scale that reflects your prior experience and training, ensuring you are compensated fairly for your expertise. Lateral hires can start as high as $90,688 and make an average of $114,000 in total compensation after just 3.5 years of service.*

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old before completion of the training program
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Citizen of the United States before completion of certification training
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a background check and physical fitness assessment
  • There is no residency requirement for Omaha Police Officers.

Essential Functions of a Police Officer:

  • Enforce federal, state, county, and city laws by de-escalating chaotic situations and apprehending potential suspects.
  • Conduct investigations and various patrol activities, including traffic investigations as assigned.
  • Serve as a first responder to disaster and emergency incidents.
  • Use appropriate force when necessary, including the use of firearms and weapons.
  • Communicate effectively with law enforcement personnel, dispatchers, citizens, witnesses, offenders, and victims.
  • Safeguard and account for evidence and non-department property.
  • Perform administrative activities, including writing reports, completing required documentation, and staying informed about new department orders and policies.
  • Participate in court procedures and proceedings.
  • Attend and engage in training activities as required.
  • Maintain regular attendance in accordance with a schedule established by your supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of an investigation.
