Volunteer Recruitment VISTA at Haven Neighborhood Services

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program dedicated to ending poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations and public agencies. VISTA’s mission is to strengthen and supplement efforts in low-income communities to eliminate and alleviate poverty by engaging volunteers from all walks of life, all geographical areas, and all age groups in a year of full-time service.

By joining the L.A. Works Volunteer Corps Program, you will be placed with one of our nonprofit partner organizations to serve for 12 months and tasked with a capacity-building project such as: creating sustainable systems to expand services, recruiting community members to volunteer in local programs, establishing a database of program alumni, and/or developing partnerships to bring new economic opportunities in Los Angeles county.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Pass a national service criminal history check
  • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens and persons residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status.

For over a decade, Haven Neighborhood Services, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization has maintained an unwavering commitment to the financial health, housing security, and education of our community members. All services that Haven Neighborhood Services provides are FREE at no-cost to our clients. Our organization, founded during the aftermath of the 2008 Economic Recession, addresses financial and housing cries among economically vulnerable individuals and families. 

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and organized Volunteer Recruitment VISTA to lead our efforts in recruiting, training, and engaging volunteers for key programs, including:

  • Free Tax Preparation (VITA Program)
  • Financial Literacy Workshops
  • Event Planning Committees
  • Other community service and engagement opportunities

This role is essential in expanding our volunteer network, ensuring proper training and support, developing a sense of community, and fostering long-term volunteer engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement

  • Develop and implement strategies to recruit volunteers through outreach, partnerships, social media, and community events.
  • Build relationships with universities, community organizations, corporate partners, and local groups to create volunteer pipelines.
  • Maintain a database of active and prospective volunteers, ensuring proper communication and follow-up.

Training & Onboarding

  • Organize and lead orientation and training sessions for tax preparation volunteers (VITA), financial literacy instructors, and other program volunteers.
  • Ensure all volunteers are equipped with the necessary tools, knowledge, and support to perform their roles effectively in these services and workshops.
  • Coordinate training materials, certifications, and compliance requirements for volunteers.

Program & Event Implementation

  • Work closely with program leads to ensure volunteers are placed in suitable roles that align with their skills and interests.
  • Support event planning committees by recruiting and managing volunteers for fundraising, outreach, and community events.
  • Track and report volunteer participation, impact, and retention to help measure program success.

Volunteer Retention & Recognition

  • Develop volunteer engagement initiatives to encourage long-term participation.
  • Plan and execute volunteer appreciation events and recognition efforts.
  • Regularly communicate with volunteers to provide updates, resources, and opportunities for involvement.
  • Organize Volunteer Appreciation Events for volunteers. 

Qualifications

  • Experience in volunteer recruitment, nonprofit program coordination, or community outreach preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate volunteers.
  • Ability to organize training sessions and facilitate group learning.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and volunteer management platforms is a plus.
  • Passion for financial empowerment, community service, and nonprofit work.
  • Proficiency in tax laws, IRS regulations, tax software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or related field (preferred).
  • Certified tax preparer, enrolled agent, or relevant tax certification (preferred).
  • Bi-lingual highly desirable
