Operations Planning Co-Op

PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that plays a vital role in the U.S. electric system. PJM ensures the reliability of the largest centrally dispatched control area in North America by coordinating the movement of electricity in all or parts of 13 states. PJM, acting neutrally and independently, operates the largest 
competitive wholesale electricity market in the world. PJM manages a sophisticated regional planning process for generation and transmission expansion to assure 
future electric.

The Transmission Operations department will be leading coordination and analysis of an unprecedented number of transmission outages in a concentrated area over the next five years.  These outages will be needed due to a very large number of necessary transmission system upgrades that have been approved to accommodate increasing data center loads and critical unit retirements.

The Transmission Service Department is responsible for the FERC Open Access requirements associated with the transfer of power into, out of and through the PJM system.  Areas of support and responsibility include compliance to FERC, NERC and NAESB standards, the calculation of available transfer capability, reservation of transmission service and scheduling of interchange. 

Outage Analysis Technologies mission is to enhance workforce effectiveness in support of Operations Planning, Operations, PJM and its members, with a focus around automation enhancements in the area of Operational Planning Analysis and advanced alarming tools. 

 

Responsibilities:

As a co-op in the Operations Planning sub-division, your responsibilities will span across four different departments, all working towards a common goal of keeping the lights on.  There will be plenty of opportunities across for four teams and we will try to tailor job tasks to the interests/skillset of each individual. The job functions are flexible and could include performing power flow analysis, interacting with generators and power companies, designing/testing application enhancements, and data analysis/visualization.  You’ll get the opportunity to get hands on experience working directly with subject matter experts in multiple areas.  Coming in with the right mindset is going to be key as we can teach you the rest.

 

Required Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Desire to learn and problem solve
  • Self-motivated, quicker learning, resourceful

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools
  • Experience with data analysis through SQL, databases, Databricks, etc.
  • Data visualization skills through tools like Tableau and Power BI
  • Customer service skills

PJM will not be providing Housing/Transportation assistance, the successful candidate must be able to come on-campus when needed.
