Job description

The Aga Khan Academy Fellows programme recruits recent graduates who have demonstrated high levels of achievement to play a pivotal role in the education of our students. The position is similar to an internship and can last for 1-2 years, depending on the location of the position. We are seeking young people who have:

  • a genuine interest and commitment to the mission of the Aga Khan Academies and in working closely with our students to help them achieve their potential;
  • a record of excellent academic achievement at a highly respected college or university; and
  • a record of significant involvement in residential life, student leadership programming, music, athletic activities, science and technology, and/or community service during college or university.

Each Academy Fellow will live in an apartment on campus and serve the student residential programme as a Residential Parent promoting community life.

Academy Fellows have a demanding and important role in our community and are responsible for the following aspects of student and academic life.

  1. While the Academy Fellow does not teach, s/he will be scheduled to have some contact with classes, to engage fully with the learning and teaching of the Academy so that s/he can support students with additional tutoring after school hours and during residential study time. This will be approximately 10 hours a week (supporting 2 or 3 classes in a subject of the fellow’s choice. (Maths,Science and English as an Additional Language are the areas of most need.)
  2. Academy Fellows play a major role as residential parents in guiding residential students in their personal and academic goals As residential parents, Fellows are expected to develop close relationships with their dorm sons/daughters by checking in with them frequently as well as supervising in an official capacity through duties twice a week and one weekend in three.
  3. Academy Fellows act as mentors to a small group of students drawn from both the day- and residential-student bodies. As mentors they check in with their students at a designated time each day, supporting their academic and social development.
  4. At the AKA Mombasa, Academy Fellows are responsible for developing and delivering the Service Learning Programme, which takes place every week with Grades 6-10. This is a 10 hours a week commitment and requires planning the activities, working with community partners, delivering the programme to students and colleagues, and supporting individual groups as they develop and implement their projects.
  5. Academy Fellows are expected to actively contribute to the co-curricular programme in some way, such as coaching athletic teams, providing music lessons or running clubs such as gardening, cooking, debating, MUN, TEDx and more. At the AKA, Hyderabad, Academy Fellows extend this work as part of the Experiential Learning Programme, which takes place each Friday.
  6. Some Fellows provide guidance for students interested in applying to top international universities, assisting with SAT preparation, or reading and giving feedback on students’ essays, personal statements, etc.
  7. Some Fellows work to support the Academies’ Student Exchange Programme for Grade 9 students. This involves preparation sessions for students who will be travelling to another Academy, induction sessions for students arriving at the Academy and a weekly enrichment programme designed to support the development of students’ intercultural awareness
  8. Academy Fellows will be asked to chaperone off-campus residential and day trips, including to places of worship.

The requirements

As an Academy Fellow, you will be exposed to the many varied aspects of life at the Academy, a large International Baccalaureate school. From this, you will gain:

  • experience of working directly with young people from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
  • experience of working in a collaborative learning community with colleagues from different cultures;
  • the opportunity to conceptualise, develop and run your own programme for young people through the extracurricular, service or academic tutoring programmes;
  • opportunities to shadow departments within the Academy (e.g., finance, HR, communications, IT support, teaching, etc.;
  • access to relevant professional development opportunities;
  • the opportunity to live in South Asia or East Africa for up to two years.

The ideal candidate will have the following profile:

  • Excellent academic achievement and a range of interests.
  • A record of significant involvement in residential, student leadership, music, athletic and / or community service during university.
  • Genuine interest in and commitment to the mission of the Aga Khan Academies: to influence young people to become future leaders in the developing world.
  • Experience of working with young people or mentoring peers.
  • Proactive self-starter, comfortable working autonomously.
  • Prior experience in the developing world is less important than openness to the new experiences, cultures and learning.
