Assistant Principal-Middle School

This position is for a 1.0 FTE Assistant Principal at Chehalis Middle School for the 2025-26 school year. The position begins July 1, 2025.  The position is open until filled. For best consideration, apply by May 12, 2025.

Position Summary:

The secondary assistant principal assists the building principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and parents. This includes such responsibilities as: leading, directing, supporting, and supervising a variety of personnel and programs; creating effective parent, teacher, and child communications; supporting, encouraging, mentoring, and evaluating staff; fostering teamwork between teachers and among staff and parents; and managing budget items. The assistant principal acts in the capacity of the principal during the principal's absence from the school.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field from an accredited college or university; Master's Degree desirable. 
  • Valid Washington State School Administrative credentials. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience.
  • Administrative Experience Preferred.

Essential Functions: 

  • Provides leadership related to the Chehalis School District Student Achievement goals and objectives, and the ability to articulate vision, goals, and progress to all staff, families, and community. 
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating school programs to promote student achievement and positive school culture.
  • Leads and manages student behavior intervention programs, including discipline, restorative practices, and MTSS/PBIS frameworks.
  • Assists in implementing discipline procedures as stated in the student handbook. Develops innovative strategies, preventative approaches, and proactive plans for students who exhibit at-risk behaviors. Uses digital tools for tracking data. 
  • Assists the principal in the supervision and evaluation of classroom instruction, assessment practices, and school improvement plans.
  • Supports teachers with instructional strategies, professional growth, and classroom management.
  • Facilitates professional development aligned with school and district goals.
  • Assists in implementing instructional strategies, including supporting the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, and staff development techniques for improvement of instruction. 
  • Assists with student success; counseling; discipline, due process; data gathering; student recognition; and securing student services with outside agencies. 
  • Acts in a supportive role with the principal in work with parents, teachers, and the community to promote the effective flow of communications and ensure positive relations with parents, business leaders and community members. Listens and responds to parent concerns with sensitivity. 
  • Works in conjunction with the principal in supervising all school activities, i.e., orientation programs, assemblies, and other special events. 
  • Fosters a positive and respectful school climate through strong relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Promotes school safety by implementing safety drills for fire, lockdowns, etc. Provides first aid and CPR if needed.
  • Assists with scheduling and other building management planning.
  • Manages staff and fiscal resources to support student achievement and legal responsibilities.
  • Has knowledge of the master schedule development, scheduling and implementation.
  • Participates in hiring, onboarding, and evaluating certified and classified staff.
  • Attends conferences, workshops and meetings to keep informed of current practices and trends in education. 
  • Attends meetings of the instructional leadership team, advisory committees, etc. as requested beyond the regular workday. 
  • Serves on district-level committees as assigned by the principal or superintendent. 
  • Collaborates with district leadership to ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and best practices.
  • Shows participation, commitment, and visibility in the community at events, activities, and organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, school personnel, parents, vendors, peers and other stakeholders. 
  • Ability to use tact, patience and courtesy when dealing with others. 
  • Ability to understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. 
  • Knowledge of varied instructional strategies, how to support the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, data-driven instruction, and staff development techniques. Familiar with Character Strong curriculum or similar program.
  • Knowledge of understanding of adolescent physical, emotional, and intellectual development. 
  • Knowledge of effective behavior management techniques such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and social/emotional best practices/experience.
  • Knowledge of budget/grants management and other fiscal responsibilities.
  • Experience with ASB oversight and leadership.
  • Ability to communicate, contribute, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people, including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. 
  • Lead the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, and supervise accordingly. 
  • Excellent interpersonal relations and oral and written communication skills. 

Successful Experience Preferred:

  • With budget/grants management
  • With SBAC testing coordination and management
  • Evaluating and supervising classified and certificated staff
  • Planning and administering an effective student discipline/attendance program
  • In the application and use of technologies and the development of the master schedule
  • Associated Student Body (ASB) Leadership Training

Contract:

Based on 260 days, to include 219 work days per year, 13 holidays, and 28 vacation days, with a salary range of $140,183 - $155,759. Terms and conditions are established by the district administrators’ agreement.

Benefits:

The District complies with State Law regarding SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) and DRS (Washington State Department of Retirement Systems) eligibility and benefit. To be eligible for SEBB benefits, a person must work 630 hours in the school year. If eligible, SEBB benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, AD&D Insurance, Flexible Spending Arrangements (FSA), and Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP). Retirement benefits, if eligible, may include membership in TRS retirement plans in addition to voluntary Deferred Compensation Program and 403(b) Annuity enrollments. Paid time off and VEBA are also benefits outlined in the Administrator Employment Agreement.
