Civil Engineer I - Bituminous Concrete Unit

The Vermont Agency of Transportation is seeking an Engineer to join the Bituminous Concrete Unit. This team ensures Quality Assurance for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and Conducts Pavement Design to support the agency's paving program. 

This position is structured to follow a seasonal workflow, with responsibilities divided between field-based materials acceptance testing during the construction season and engineering design work during the winter months. The incumbent will support a range of engineering functions within the Bituminous Concrete Unit, including quality assurance of materials, pavement and materials investigations, review of mix and pavement designs, and analysis of roadway profiler data for profile development. The incumbent will be assigned specific projects and will work under the direct supervision of their supervisor or other engineers within the unit. 

Major job duties of this position may include: 

  • HMA Acceptance testing at production facilities
  • Plant and Lab inspection, and oversite of producer compliance with specification and quality assurance requirements
  • Laboratory Materials research and verification of HMA mix designs
  • Conducting materials investigations, pavement condition and structural evaluations
  • Post-Construction pavement evaluation and failure investigations
  • Pavement profiler operation and profile surface design

Ideal candidates will possess a foundational understanding of materials testing principles and must be able to obtain certification as an HMA Plant Technician upon completion of Agency-provided training. This position involves traveling to various sites throughout Vermont and occasionally to neighboring states. It offers a high degree of autonomy during field assignments. This position does require occasional work on nights and weekends, and frequent overtime during the construction season.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.
OR
College senior in the final year of a bachelor’s degree program in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.
