Position Type: Federal Work Study Only

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

The Writing Center is seeking motivated Work Study students to join our team as Writing Consultants beginning in the Fall 2025 semester! 

As a consultant, you will work with fellow students one-on-one, both in person and online, to support their growth as writers across disciplines and at all stages of the writing process. 

Duties include: 

  • Meeting with students to provide feedback on writing projects across the disciplines and at many different levels of coursework in a supportive, conversational environment.
  • Offering guidance on effective writing practices, including brainstorming, organization, clarity, and revision strategies.
  • Helping students understand and apply different formatting styles, including APA and MLA (training provided for additional styles such as CSE and Chicago).
  • Attending and assisting with in-class workshops and special events alongside the Writing Center team.
  • Maintaining accurate session records and communicating effectively with the Writing Center staff.
  • Participating and providing ongoing professional development and training sessions.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have passed English 1310 (or a similar course at a different institution).
  • Computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and/or Google Docs for formatting/layout.
  • Basic understanding of grammar and spelling conventions.
  • Good understanding of writing projects (such as research essays) at the college level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Training is provided, including mentoring from experienced consultants and professional development workshops.
  • Prior tutoring experience is helpful but not required.
  • Optional: Knowledge and experience using social media for marketing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of effective writing strategies and academic writing conventions.
  • Familiarity with APA and MLA formatting; willingness to learn other styles.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of languages other than English is a plus!

Anticipated Schedule: 

  • 5-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
