BHDDH Forensic Outpatient Clinic - Research Intern
Background
The BHDDH Forensic Division is responsible for conducting court-ordered evaluations to determine individuals' competency to stand trial and providing outpatient services to individuals who have been adjudicated incompetent. The division operates at the intersection of behavioral health and the legal system, ensuring individuals receive appropriate assessment, treatment, and monitoring services in accordance with legal mandates and clinical standards.
Purpose of Internship
In partnership with Roger Williams University, this internship is designed to offer practical research experience while contributing to the Forensic Division’s operational and quality improvement efforts. The intern will assist in data collection, organization, and research activities that support the division’s goals in service delivery, accountability, and evidence-informed practices.
Intern Responsibilities
- Data Collection & Entry
Assist in gathering data from clinical evaluations, administrative databases, and court records. Support efforts to systematize and digitize historical data sources where applicable.
- Data Organization & Management
Organize data into clean, structured formats to support analysis and reporting. Maintain detailed data logs and documentation for accuracy and transparency.
- Basic Analysis & Reporting
Perform descriptive analysis (e.g., counts, timelines, trends) using Excel or other tools. Contribute to the development of summary reports, tables, and visual data presentations.
- Literature Review & Research Support
Conduct research on best practices related to forensic mental health services, competency evaluation, and restoration models. Summarize key findings for use in internal policy briefs or presentations.
- Collaboration & Communication
Participate in team meetings, case discussions, and project planning sessions. Present interim findings and updates to supervisors and relevant stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications
- Enrolled at Roger Williams University with a focus in psychology, criminal justice, public health, legal studies, or related fields.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Acces, SQL, Rstudio or other data management platforms.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and respect for confidentiality and ethical standards.
