STATUS: Full-Time (Seasonal) 

RATE: $28-35/Hr - Depending on experience. 

 

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield (BGCG) is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.

The CHO Site Coordinator will oversee the implementation of the Department of Environmental Protection's Youth Inclusion Initiative (YII) for a 6-week summer program, fostering environmental stewardship and youth development within overburdened communities. This position will serve as the main point of contact between the DEP and BGCG, ensuring that the program meets all goals and expectations through effective leadership, mentorship, and coordination. The CHO Site Coordinator will manage all aspects of program delivery, including participant engagement, professional development, and project execution, while also working closely with the DEP Program Coordinator and BGCG leadership to ensure seamless program operations.

 

 

Full Job Description

The Boys & Girls Club of Garfield is seeking a dynamic and dedicated professional to manage, mentor, and implement high-quality programming for youth ages 16-18 involved in the Youth Inclusion Initiative (YII). The CHO Site Coordinator will play a critical role in creating a structured and supportive learning environment that promotes environmental education and workforce development. The primary responsibility of the CHO Site Coordinator is to ensure that the program’s objectives are met, participants are engaged, and all activities are executed in alignment with DEP guidelines and BGCG’s mission.

Hours:

  • The CHO Site Coordinator role requires a full-time commitment during the six-week program from early July to mid-August with typical daily hours from 8 AM to 5 PM.
  • Flexibility for early starts or late finishes is required depending on daily activities and program needs.
  • While the program runs for 6 weeks, the position is a seasonal 8-week role to accommodate administrative and logistical responsibilities before and after the program period. Pre-program planning and preparation sessions will begin in April and may require limited availability during weekdays for meetings, training, and coordination. Post-program reporting and evaluation will also require additional work in the final weeks after program completion. All of this is compensated.

Responsibilities:

Pre-Program Preparation (April to June):

  • Complete all onboarding requirements as outlined by the BGCG and Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Stay up to date on all emails regarding program schedules, participant logistics, and activity details. The candidate must be proactive in staying on top of all the program-related logistics.
  • Attend two days of in-person training and a half-day of virtual training in June at DEP Headquarters in Trenton to review program structure and operational procedures. June 16th and 17th. 
  • Work with the Program Director to recruit and select 12 youth participants through a structured interview process.
  • Develop and coordinate the joint Orientation Day with the paired CHO, scheduled for July 7 at BGCG’s facility or alternate facility.

Program Duration (July 7 to August 15):

  • CHO Orientation Day (July 7): Lead the joint Orientation Day with partner CHO, introducing program details, expectations, and an overview of activities.
  • DEP Orientation Day (July 8): Supervise and guide participants throughout the Department of Environmental Protection's Orientation Day at BGCG, introducing program details, expectations, and an overview of activities.
  • Community Project Days (Mondays): Guide youth participants in developing and executing a community project. Oversee project progress and ensure completion of key milestones. Manage all supply orders and budgeted items to ensure timely availability for project completion.
  • DEP Program Days (Tuesdays to Thursdays): Oversee logistics and support participants during hands-on environmental activities with DEP staff. Maintain communication with DEP Program Coordinators.
  • Professional Development Days (Fridays): Facilitate workshops on resume and cover letter development, career readiness, and project presentations. Engage education partners like LevelALL or pre-established teen curriculum for mock interviews and professional development opportunities.

Final Week (Week 6, August 12 to 15):

  • Oversee the completion of the community project and ensure all deliverables are met.
  • Facilitate educational activities, including workshops, career guidance sessions, and field trips.
  • Provide mentorship throughout the final day closing ceremony, where youth will present their projects and receive recognition for their accomplishments. The CHO Site Coordinator must be prepared to say a few words about their cohort and introduce each of their youth participants.

Post-Program (August):

  • Compile and submit all necessary program documentation and reports to DEP.
  • Conduct participant and staff debriefing sessions to evaluate program success and identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepare a summary report for BGCG leadership and DEP detailing program outcomes, youth engagement, and future recommendations.

Daily Management:

  • Ensure the safety and engagement of all participants during program activities.
  • Manage all program documentation and compliance with DEP guidelines.
  • Manage timesheets, ensuring adherence to clock-in and clock-out procedures.
  • Coordinate with DEP staff and BGCG leadership to address any operational or logistical issues.
  • Oversee adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Serve as the point of contact for all supply orders, food, and transportation vendors.

Stakeholder Communication:

  • Maintain regular communication with the DEP Program Coordinator, BGCG Program Director, Co-host Organization, parents, and stakeholders.
  • Provide updates and integrate feedback to enhance the program experience.
  • Ensure consistent alignment with DEP’s program objectives and BGCG’s mission.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Education, Social Work, or a related field (preferred but not required).
  • At least 2 years of experience in youth development, teen engagement, or environmental conservation.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and supervise high school-aged youth.
  • Experience in project management and working with external partners.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage complex schedules and activities.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (preferred but not required).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to provide transportation if needed.
  • Must pass a background check and meet BGCG’s safety and compliance standards.
