Housing Specialist

As a Housing Specialist I, you will perform a variety of technical case management duties. Applying your analytical skills, you will review financial accounts to assist with determination of initial and continued eligibility for federally/locally funded and regulated programs. These programs include, but are not limited to, tenant-based, Mainstream, Non-Elderly Disabled, Family Unification, Veterans’ Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers direct referrals from other agencies, and third-party case managers. Working under the guidance of the Program Manager and Housing Specialist II, you will maintain accurate case files and regularly interact with landlords, program participants, and the general public in a courteous and professional manner.

Essential Duties

  • Using a trauma informed approach, perform basic case management, including identifying client needs, providing information, and scheduling appointments.
  • Perform in-depth analysis and review of financial accounts to assist in determining program eligibility and identifying potential fraud. Ensure adherence to program policies and guidelines.
  • Support investigations of alleged fraud within the public housing authority and assist with the termination process, as required.
  • Establish, organize, and maintain electronic records management/file systems. Maintain confidentiality of client information.
  • Research and compile information to create and prepare reports, procedures, handbooks, packets, forms and other materials, including regular voucher briefing presentations.
  • Calculate subsidy payments and repayment agreements.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the housing choice voucher program. Respond to questions regarding regulations, policies, procedures, and practices as related to the program.
  • Ensure all work is complete and timely to support department goals. Evaluate feedback and procedures to improve efficiency.
  • Invite collaboration and seek learning opportunities. Proactively assist peers to create a supportive work environment.
  • Exhibit integrity, ethics, and fiscal responsibility.

You Might Be a Good Fit If

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
  • One or more years of related experience
  • A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Housing Choice Voucher Specialist certification (or must obtain within 6 months of employment)
  • Fair Housing and Reasonable Accommodations certification (or must obtain within 6 months of employment)

Additional Information

  • May be required to work outside of standard hours.
