
Communications Coordinator: Mountain Sentinels
Working with Mountain Sentinels provides countless opportunities to work across cultures internationally and gain exposure to building communities, and promoting resilience and adaptation through natural resource management in mountain environments across the world. The Communications Coordinator will work directly with leading scientists, community leaders, early career professionals, and students from around the world to amplify some of the most critical work in mountain sustainability through compelling storytelling and communications materials.
This opportunity provides a space to be creative and collaborate to develop compelling visual and written communications to accelerate mountain science, community and ways of knowing. Applicants are encouraged to have or develop a passion for mountain ecosystems and their local communities around the world.

Skills and Qualifications
- Technical skills in social media communications strategy, analysis, design, and content development (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook)
- Moderate technical skills in website management, particularly WordPress
- Technical skills in science communication writing
- Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Canva, or equivalent graphic design platform
- A self-starter willing to take the initiative to develop materials related to the work of the Mountain Sentinels Alliance, working across different types of partners and audiences
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and dissolving complex concepts into impactful messaging and a willingness to acknowledge participants' needs, to think openly and differently about communication
- Ability to work across cultures bringing curiosity and active listening to every engagement with local and Indigenous communities around the world, embracing the Mountain Sentinels Core Values and Community Engagement Principles
- Prior experience engaging with Indigenous, Native, and international audiences
Some Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development and delivery of social media content across Instagram and LinkedIn with the potential to move onto Bluesky.
- Lead the design and development of the monthly Mountain Sentinels Newsletter distributed around the world and across our network partners in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe.
- Lead or coordinate the development of regular blog posts alongside our international network including the Mountain Sentinels leadership team, Fellows, partner networks, academics and community members.
- Improve the Mountain Sentinels website and blog supporting the Program Manager in developing regular content updates.
- Support the Program Manager in copyediting and developing reports and other content distributed across the network, National Science Foundation (NSF), and United Nations (and other high-level political spaces)
- Support the Program Manager and leadership team in moderating and developing messaging for international WhatsApp chat platforms.
