Tax Manager and Compliance Officer

Summary of Job Duties:

The Tax Manager and Compliance Officer will be directly responsible for preparing the 990-T Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return and the annual tax questionnaire, as well as reviewing new revenue-producing activities, sampling revenues to ensure appropriate evaluation of income sources as unrelated business income, and reviewing contracts and rental agreements to identify, track, and suggest changes to avoid unrelated business income tax. Additionally, the position will review and compile documentation for taxable fringe benefits for university employees, employee benefits acquired through the U of A Foundation, and taxable moving expenses. The tax manager proactively identifies and monitors emerging tax policy, identifies and assesses areas of tax compliance risk and provides options and recommendations for addressing potential risk. The role also requires experience in written and verbal communication, including writing opinion memos, procedures, professional correspondence, and maintaining the tax compliance website as well as conducting meetings with employees at all levels or leading training sessions. This role would assist in adhering to post-issuance compliance requirements for the University's tax-exempt debt portfolio and maintain documentation required for tax-exempt bonds. Responsibilities related to post-issuance requirements include but are not limited to monitoring the use of bond-financed facilities to ensure compliance with private use limitations, conduct periodic reviews of bond-financed projects, and develop and implement compliance procedures. The tax manager must stay updated on tax laws and regulations that impact University activities and be prepared to take on other duties as assigned. Must be able to develop strong professional relationships from Vice Chancellors to any other level of employees at the university.

Qualifications:

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • At least three years of experience in tax compliance, tax planning, tax preparation, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of tax laws and regulations impacting nonprofit organizations and universities, including unrelated business income tax (UBIT), fringe benefits, and tax-exempt status
  • Intermediate experience in Excel and strong data analysis experience
  • Experience in preparing reports, opinion memos, and correspondence, and experience communicating with employees at all levels

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Enrolled Agent (EA)
  • Master’s degree in taxation or accounting
  • Experience with tax returns for exempt organizations, specifically the 990-T Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return
  • Experience in consulting or advising on tax issues and providing recommendations for current and emerging challenges

  • Verbal Communication: Skilled in effectively communicating complex tax information to individuals at all levels of the organization, including faculty, staff, and management
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex tax issues, review contracts, rental agreements, and business activities to identify tax implications, and provide clear recommendations
  • Problem-Solving: Strong ability to identify potential tax-related problems or challenges and develop effective solutions
