Overview: The Leadership and Service Council (also known as The Council) will work under the supervision of the Leadership & Service staff to plan and coordinate leadership and service programs and initiatives for Texas State University. 

The Leadership & Service Council’s work will also be divided into two separate functional areas:

  1. The LEAD Council is comprised of 4 students who will be supervised by the Coordinator for Leadership Development Programs Tsering Chophel. Their work will focus on leadership development programs.
  2. The SERVE Council is comprised of 4 students who will be supervised by the Coordinator for Community Service and Volunteer Programs Jason Garica. Their work will focus on community service and volunteer opportunities.

All undergraduate student staff, graduate student staff, and Coordinators report to the Associate Director of Leadership & Service Jasmine Jennings-Rentz.

Payrate: $12.00 per hour for 10 hours a week

Collective Job Responsibilities

The Leadership & Service Council is expected to complete the following job responsibilities as a full student staff team:

  1. Attend required student staff training on August 14, 2025
  2. Attend required Leadership & Service Student Leader Retreat on August 15, 2025
  3. Support all Leadership & Service signature programs by assisting with set up, event management, and clean up
  4. Attend 1:1s with respective Coordinator
  5. Attend mandatory L&S student staff meetings led by the Associate Director or Coordinators
  6. Facilitate weekly office hours with one day of office hours scheduled during the evenings
  7. Mentor 1 freshman Texas Leadership Scholar student
  8. Visit student organizations to promote Leadership & Service opportunities
  9. Plan the Spring 2026 Leadership & Service Mixer event

LEAD Council Signature Responsibilities

  1. Bobcats LEAD Retreats
  2. Bobcats LEAD Pathway Programs
  3. Facilitate Leadership Workshops
  4. Support all other Leadership & Service events and programs

SERVE Council Signature Responsibilities

  1. Bobcat Break Trips
  2. Service Saturdays
  3. Community Partner Relations
  4. Support all other Leadership & Service events and programs

Employee Evaluation Process: The Leadership & Service Council Performance Evaluation assesses a student staff member’s performance, highlights their skills and strengths, and constructively identifies areas for improvement. Student employees will complete an evaluation rubric with their direct supervisor at the end of every semester. Students will be evaluated based on the following qualities or skills:

  1. Programmatic
  2. Administrative
  3. Professional Development and Team Dynamics

Desired Skills or Qualities Needed for Position

  1. Event planning: the process of organizing and executing events and activities
  2. Organizational and administrative skills: skills that allow you to be efficient and effective when managing responsibilities. These skills could include time management, communication, attention to detail, and prioritization.
  3. Ability to work some evenings and weekends: Leadership & Service has several events that occur during the evenings and weekends. Evening events in include the Leadership & Service Mixer, Texas Leadership Scholars Program meetings, and requested leadership development workshops. Weekend events include Service Saturday, Bobcats LEAD Retreat, Bobcat Build’s Big Event, and requested leadership development workshops. This is not an exhaustive list.
  4. Public speaking or presentation facilitation: ability to speak in front of an audience and/or deliver a presentation
  5. Peer leadership: ability to lead or guide students in a 1:1 or group setting through activities and meetings
