School Social Worker

SUMMARY School Social Workers provide social, emotional, and behavioral support services in a collaborative manner as an essential part of the school team. These services can be provided through direct service to students or consultation to enable staff ability to resolve student problems. Social workers view problem development and intervention from a systems perspective. They foster communication among school, home, and community support systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Organize and manage the workload in the assigned schools to meet legal mandates and timelines.
2. Communicate and work at a high level of quality and proficiency with students, staff, and parents, verbally and in writing.
3. Provide consultation, coaching, and modeling at the building and classroom levels using current best practice i.e. a Multi-Tiered System of Supports model.
4. Train, support and maintain a School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports system within local school buildings and individual classrooms.
5. Model and teach students and staff behavioral interventions that meet the needs of students at various tiers of support, that can be implemented successfully within the school/classroom environment.
6. Have knowledgeable use of tools and systems for student and program data collection and review, measurement of program effectiveness, and other measures of quality and efficacy.
7. For students who are exhibiting areas of need related to behavior, (with or without special education eligibility), to provide school administration, staff and families with strategies, modeling, and information to reduce the educational impact of behavior and other emotional difficulties in accordance with a Multi-Tiered System of Support.
8. Help foster the culture, willingness, and development of capacity with classroom teachers and administrators to meet the behavioral needs of students within the general education setting.
9. Assist school staff with collecting and utilizing behavioral data to develop interventions and behavior plans for struggling students.
10. Participate in child study and/or other data-based problem-solving team meetings, consultations, and assessment planning meetings to inform instruction and intervention.
11. Conduct all necessary components of the Michigan Special Education process as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS Education:
Experience: Masters Degree in Social Work.
1. Experience working with school aged children.
2. Experience with assessment as well as planning and implementing therapeutic activities designed to address areas of need.
3. Experience working as part of a collaborative team.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
1. Valid Michigan license as a Social Worker (Limited or Full).
2. Michigan Department of Education approval, or eligible for MDE approval, as a School Social Worker.
Other knowledge, skills, and abilities:
1. Proficient in use of office equipment and essential computer software/technology.
2. Communications skills – ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, in writing and verbally.
3. Interpersonal skills – cooperative, courteous, flexible, good natured, and concerned with being helpful and representing the organization well.
4. Effective work skills – conscientious, persistent, resourceful, productive, and active.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
2. Occasionally positions self to maintain files in file cabinets.
3. Occasionally positions self to maintain files on shelves. WORK ENVIRONMENT Normal office environment. It is anticipated that some stress will be associated with this position primarily due to deadlines and irregular workflow. It is necessary that the individual have the capacity to remain calm, considerate, and tactful.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK Employee is expected to work 5 days per week, 7 hours per day during the school year. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
TRAVEL The employee may be asked to travel between the school districts in Clinton County and to other Michigan Intermediate School Districts on occasion.
