Middle School Sheltered Instruction (Math ESOL): 2025-2026 School Year

JOB TITLE: Middle School Sheltered Instruction (Math ESOL) 

 

JOB BRIEF:    

  • To plan for, teach and provide instruction that will enable each student to master social and academic skills appropriate to age, grade level, language proficiency and individual capacity. Sheltered instruction is an approach for teaching content (math) to Emergent bilinguals in strategic ways that make the subject matter concepts comprehensible while promoting the students' English language development. This position will incorporate students' existing skills and knowledge to facilitate connections to grade level (math) concepts with the use of content and language specific objectives. 

LOCATION: Anthony and Eisenhower Middle Schools 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • A valid KS Teaching License/Certification or the ability to obtain one with the appropriate grade level(s) and endorsement(s).
  • Degree from an accredited college and university.
  • Personalized pathways for specific endorsements (ESOL, Math) can be discussed and may be established and supported for candidates hired for the position.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of individuals of diverse ethnic, cultural, linguistic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Solid understanding of the stages of second language acquisition.
  • Bilingual / Biliterate preferred but not required.
  • All USD 383 employees must pass a background check.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Provide instructional support that will charter students’ receptive, productive, and interactive language modalities within the school environment.
  • Develop and use instructional materials suitable for instruction of students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, linguistic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Create lesson plans based on sheltered instruction models: to teach content to students learning English through a developmental language approach.
  • Demonstrates mathematical concepts using models, linguistic supports, whiteboards, manipulatives, technology and other standards or teacher prepared instructional aids.
  • Designs learning activities that will relate mathematics to the physical world.
  • Knowledgeable and competent in Mathematics and aware of mathematics standards.
  • Able to analyze student data to drive instruction.
  • Able to utilize student ELPA data to provide appropriate linguistic aids to support students' progress in improving their academic language proficiency.
  • Utilizes instructional strategies and interventions that are best practices in the field of Mathematics while providing consistent linguistic support.
  • Effectively collaborates with math colleagues to ensure student progress.
  • Confer with parents/guardians, teachers and staff in regard to individual students.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative relations with others.
  • Devise and maintain records and reports as necessary to the successful execution of the job as well as State and Federal Audits.
  • Possess knowledge of the operation and use of various teaching equipment and technology.
  • Attend and participate in staff and faculty meetings and professional development.
  • Effectively collaborate with administrators, teachers, and instructional support staff to ensure students are progressing and receiving proper academic and linguistic support.
  • Supervise instructional aide(s) and volunteers as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and/or ESOL Coordinator.

 TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:     

  • Full time school year position.
  • Based on Salary Schedule.
  • Salary Schedule 2024-2025
  • 2025-2026 Salary yet to be established. 
     

REPORTS TO: Principal and District ESOL Coordinator.

 RETIREMENT: 

  • USD 383 makes monthly contributions to a 403(b)-retirement account for all certified and eligible employees.
  • KPERS (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System): 6% monthly staff contribution. Vested after five years.

 TECHNOLOGY:   

  • District provided devices - iPad, laptop and/or desktop for certified staff.

PAID COLLABORATION TIME.   

FLSA STATUS: Exempt. 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
