Summer Recreation Specialist - Day Camp Staff
This is specialist work in the City's summer recreation Day Camp programs.
An employee in this class supervises and instructs a summer recreation Day Camp program. The season for employees in this class in the Recreation and Parks division begins April 1 and ends December 1 each year.
Works under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or independently under general supervision.
Characteristic Work
Supervises and instructs activities for children engaged in Day Camps for children ages 5 to 12 years old, Arts & Crafts, Dance, Fitness, Sports and other recreation activities. Ensures programs are conducted in an orderly fashion; maintains staff and participant safety. Ensures appropriate conduct from participants. Greets participants and visitors and distributes accurate information regarding all activities and sites. Maintains open and positive communication with participants and visitors. Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings. Provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other city departments and the general public. Prepares a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, and flyers. Coordinates, schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs. Collects fees associated with programs. Assists in recruiting, organizing, and coordinating volunteer staff. Plans and participates in publicizing programs and in stimulating participation. Assists in coordinating, scheduling, and supervising City and Community Learning Center recreation facilities; ensures proper use of facilities by recreation groups. Required to work some evening and weekend hours, tournaments, evening leagues, special events, skill or other major recreation or City sponsored events. Applies first aid. Conducts safety and maintenance checks of assigned location. May assist with food and beverage preparation. Sets up tables, booths and equipment for events. Performs a variety of miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, running errands, and assisting other City divisions as needed. Adheres to all City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Learns and follows City and Departmental practices and safety procedures. Performs related work as required.
Must be able to work during Day Camp hours between 7:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. May occasionally be required to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends. Must occasionally perform difficult physical labor such as climbing, bending, kneeling and performing repetitive movements.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of formal participation or instructional experience in day camps or related work.
Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in assigned community recreation program. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Competitive Examination Process
This is a classified position.
The examination will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's applicable experience and their general recreation background. Candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position sought.
