Summer Recreation Specialist - Dance

This is specialist work in the City's Dance program.
 
An employee in this class develops, supervises, and instructs a summer recreation dance program.  The season for employees in this class in the Recreation and Parks division begins April 1 and ends December 1 each year. 

Works under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or independently under general supervision.

Characteristic Work

Develops, supervises and instructs classes, and activities for persons engaged in recreation dance programs. Ensures programs are conducted in an orderly fashion; maintains staff and participant safety.  Ensures appropriate conduct from participants.  Greets participants and visitors and distributes accurate information regarding all activities and sites.  Maintains open and positive communication with participants and visitors.   Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.  Provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other city departments and the general public.  Prepares a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, and flyers.  Coordinates, schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs.  Collects fees associated with programs.  Assists in recruiting, organizing, and coordinating volunteer staff.  Plans and participates in publicizing programs and in stimulating participation.  Assists in coordinating, scheduling, and supervising City and Community Learning Center recreation facilities; ensures proper use of facilities by recreation groups.  Required to work some evening and weekend hours, tournaments, evening leagues, special events, skill or other major recreation or City sponsored events.  Applies first aid.  Conducts safety and maintenance checks of assigned location.  May assist with food and beverage preparation.  Sets up tables, booths and equipment for events.  Performs a variety of miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, running errands, and assisting other City divisions as needed.  Adheres to all City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations.  Learns and follows City and Departmental practices and safety procedures.  Performs related work as required.

Must be able to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends.  Must occasionally perform difficult physical labor such as climbing, bending, kneeling and performing repetitive movements.  Must lift weights of over 50 pounds as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of formal participation or instructional experience in Dance.
