Merchandising & Marketing Intern

Job Title: Merchandising & Marketing Intern

Status: Part-Time

Location: Utica, NY (On-Site)

Salary: $15/hour


The Boilermaker Road Race is seeking a Marketing and Communications Intern to assist with various aspects of Boilermaker’s July events. 

In this role, the intern will work on projects relating to sports marketing, merchandising, communication, and race logistics and planning. There is an opportunity to tailor this role to personal interests and goals as well.

This intern will report to the Merchandise & Marketing Manager while working closely with the President, Race Director, Sponsor Manager, and others.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Assist with social media planning, including brainstorming and drafting post copy
  • Create social media video content in line with strategic goals
  • Provide hands-on assistance with merchandise planning, including tagging clothing, creating promotional signage and material, developing store layout, and populating inventory system
  • Develop email communication for registered runners
  • Develop marketing emails for the Boilermaker online store
  • Assist with conducting and analyzing the Boilermaker post-event survey
  • Assist with website copy updates 
  • Provide customer service support at all Boilermaker events, as needed

Internship Schedule

The internship schedule is flexible based on availability and overall duration. Our goal is to have someone on board before May 18, 2025, so they can attend our Erie Canal Races event.

We ask that applicants be able to commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week, to be worked on Tuesdays and Thursdays in our office at 805 Court Street in Utica. There is the opportunity for additional hours, if desired, to be discussed upon hiring.

The ideal candidate must be available to work 40 hours Monday, July 7 - Sunday, July 13, 2024, which includes Boilermaker Expo set-up, the Boilermaker Health & Wellness Expo, and the Boilermaker 15K and 5K race events.

The internship is conducted and partially funded in partnership with the Oneida County College Corps program. The selected candidate will be routed through their office for the employment setup. In addition, the candidate will be required to report their weekly hours to the program and will be paid by their office.

 

Internship Requirements

  • Ability to commit to the internship schedule outlined above, specifically availability the week of July 7 - July 13
  • Junior or senior in college working towards an undergraduate degree in Digital Marketing, Sports Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Merchandising, or related field
  • Proficient in Google Workspace programs (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Shopify, and content management systems (WordPress) preferred
  • Candidates with experience in social media advertising (Meta) will be given priority

In 1978, the Boilermaker began as a 15K road race with 930 runners, created to celebrate founding sponsor Utica Boiler’s 50th anniversary. Today, it is a week-long extravaganza drawing over 20,000 runners, spectators, and volunteers.
