Sustainability Coordinator
Job Description
Performs professional work in support of the City’s sustainability, resiliency, and environmental programs. Working under the supervision of the Sustainability Manager, the Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, coordination, and reporting on the City’s sustainability initiatives, policies, procedures, and other work as required.
Essential Functions
- Support the development and implementation of the City’s Sustainability Action Plan including, but not limited to, researching national and regional best practices in sustainability planning, maintaining the City’s sustainability dashboard, obtaining necessary updates from City departments, and developing reports and updates related to implementation progress.
- Compiling data, preparing reports, and conducting research for review and consideration in support of a variety of sustainability programs. May attend meetings and workshops related to these programs.
- Assist in identifying federal, state, and private grant opportunities and in the development of grant applications. Involves research, writing, and organizational review to provide a summary for supervisory consideration.
- Assisting the supervisor in planning, promoting, and implementing community outreach and special events; attending events as needed.
- Assist in the development and implementation of employee engagement initiatives related to recycling, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and other environmental initiatives. Work with employees to reduce energy, water, and natural resource consumption.
- Research and recommend opportunities for sustainability recognition programs for the City, City businesses, or individuals.
- Assist with all staff liaison duties to the Sustainability Advisory Board.
- Attend relevant meetings, network calls and webinars and take notes of relevant and valuable information, contacts, tools, and programs for supervisory review and consideration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- General office practices and procedures
- Local government and public sector organization and procedures
- The principles and best practices of sustainability, resiliency, and environmental programs
Skilled in:
- Use of grammar and ability to write, type, edit and proofread for accuracy.
- Writing of professional and effective letters, memos, emails, and reports.
- Microsoft Office suite, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and a moderate degree of proficiency with Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Use of computers and software applications to a moderate degree of proficiency
- Time management – organizes and allocates time to plan, execute, and follow-up on and complete tasks.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other public or governmental agencies, and external stakeholders.
- Prepare detailed reports.
- Manage tasks and deadlines in an organized and professional manner.
- Work independently and collaboratively with internal and external partners
- Adapt to changing priorities and exhibit flexibility.
- Remain informed on sustainability industry trends
- Compile, analyze, and interpret data and research
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or other related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master of Public Administration degree in Sustainability Management or master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a closely related field
- One (1) or more years of experience in an administrative support position including sustainability research and/or project or program research or clerical support
Additional experience is accepted as a minimum requirement in lieu of the postsecondary degree on the following basis: additional four (4) years in lieu of the bachelor’s degree, and additional two (2) years in lieu of an associate degree.
