Our Location and Design Division is seeking an Engineer – Roadway Design to join our team. The selected candidate will be responsible for the design and production of right of way and construction roadway plans for a wide range of transportation projects using automated engineering and design software. Duties include:

Teamwork and Customer Service: Demonstrates customer service and work habits that reflect the VDOT Values and coordinates the flow of information both orally and in writing.
Roadway Design: Develop and review sub-components and complete roadway designs using automated engineering and design software from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects. Compute quantities and prepare plan assemblies for project milestones from scoping to advertisement. Take appropriate action to resolve problems related to project design. Provide technical direction and support in the application of VDOT's standards, specifications, policies, and procedures in the development of transportation projects. Ensure deliverables are accurate and correct in content.
Analysis and Technical: Reporting Analyze and interpret engineering data and information. Prepare complete, clear, and concise reports and recommendations.
CADD and Computer Skills: Complete roadway design tasks in MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AASHTOWARE, and other non-CADD applications. Recognize and analyze significant problems and develop and recommend solutions.
Manage Assigned Activities: Plan, schedule, and coordinate engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline.
Special Assignments: Manage special program initiatives and projects as assigned. Serve and represent VDOT or assigned program area on various committees and work groups.
Engineering Process Management: Use established VDOT policies and procedures in the development and delivery of engineering projects. Engineering projects are completed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
Communication: Establish an effective line of communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies and the public. Investigate issues and resolve complaints.
Project Engineering: Assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports. Complete multiple concurrent tasks and assignments, and report updates on their status.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
     
  • Experience in roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications, and materials.
     
  • Experience applying design standards, specifications, policies, and procedures.
     
  • Experience applying civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.
     
  • Skill in building networks and relationships with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives.
     
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering and design software.
     
  • Ability to plan and schedule work.
     
  • Skill in delivering exemplary customer service
     
  • Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.
     

 

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
     
  • A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
     
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
