Marketing Intern
Position Summary:
CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union is looking for a Marketing Intern to join the team. CommonWealth One has grown to serve over 38,000 members with over $550 million in assets. The credit union proudly serves the community with five branches in NOVA/DC, and the credit union’s headquarters is located in Alexandria, VA. There are two branches in Harrisonburg, one of which is located on the campus of JMU.
CommonWealth One’s paid internship program enables students to participate in valuable real-world work experience through a variety of tailored assignments within their areas of interest and fields of study. The Marketing Intern will work closely with the marketing team to explore the world of marketing campaigns, projects, and events as well as developing content to help deliver our brand in new and existing markets. The intern will work in a learning environment and have the opportunity, and is encouraged, to provide insight, ideas and feedback on digital and traditional marketing messages as well as assist with production schedules, copywriting, editing, photography, concept and design work, research, event planning and activities.
Responsibilities:
- Review and assist with existing marketing material and digital content.
- Track engagement on social media.
- Assist with writing content for social media, newsletters and other communication channels.
- Provide ideas and insight to reach a college-aged demographic group; Write a plan to reach students and explore ways to better connect with them.
- Collaborate with the marketing team on traditional and digital marketing campaign elements.
- Design marketing fliers, signs, and campaign elements.
- Prepare and generate reports on campaigns, consumers, competitors, and market conditions.
- Coordinate and plan events including contacting vendors, registration, and logistics of scheduled event.
- Assist Business Development activities such as event planning and preparation, campaigns, sales reporting and database maintenance.
- Work on other projects and internal training as assigned to learn and explore various aspects of financial services marketing and member journey mapping.
Education & Experience:
- Preferred fields of study: pursuing a Bachelor’s or master’s in marketing, advertising, communications, journalism, business administration or other related fields.
- 0-3 years of relevant work experience.
Skills & Abilities:
- Baseline understanding of the marketing funnel and process, and what it means to have a strong brand.
- Ability to simultaneously work and navigate within multiple programs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Publisher), required; and knowledge of design software (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), preferred.
- Basic understanding of HTML or experience in website content management systems, a plus.
- Personal experience with Social Media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, etc.)
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions; communicate and interact professionally.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented and collaborative environment.
- Ability to offer suggestions and solve problems as they occur.
- Flexible availability to support marketing/business development events.
This is a paid internship that may last up to 8 – 10 weeks or more depending on the business need and student’s schedule with a starting pay rate range of $18.00/ per hour - $20.00 per/ hour.
Work Environment:
- This position will be required to work closely partner with the Marketing & Business Development department located at CommonWealth One’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA virtually and/ or in person on a Monday – Friday (40 hours) full-time basis in the Summer and/ or on a part-time schedule during the school year.
- Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and routinely uses standard office equipment.

Summary of Physical Demands:
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to convey detailed or important instructions and ideas accurately, audibly and quickly; hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information; use hands to perform such tasks a computer typing, file maintenance, using telephones, ten key adding machines and related office equipment; regular and frequent movement requiring use of hands, writes, arms, fingers; visual acuity required to prepare, read, and inspect documents and interpret information on a PC screen. This is primarily sedentary office work with occasional physical activity requiring lifting of small boxes/files. Ability to sit for long periods.
