 POSITION SUMMARY: The Discovery Unit Paralegal plays an essential role in upholding the Prosecutor’s Office’s legal and ethical obligations by managing the intake, preparation, and disclosure of discovery materials in criminal cases. Working under the supervision of Chief Counsel, Strategic Operations, the paralegal serves as a critical bridge between law enforcement, trial staff, and defense counsel to ensure accurate and timely delivery of evidence. This position supports all units—including General Trial Staff—and upholds best practices in digital evidence handling, case preparation, and public accountability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Timely response and communications to defense counsel motion of discovery. 
    Intake, catalog, and prepare discovery materials submitted by multiple law enforcement agencies.
  • Redact sensitive materials in compliance with legal and policy requirements.
  • Track case discovery status, deadlines, and disclosures in the case management system.
  • Maintain clear, professional communication with police departments, internal legal teams, and opposing counsel.
  • Support Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys with document review, exhibit preparation, and trial binders as needed.
  • Flag missing or deficient materials and proactively work to resolve gaps in evidence.
  • Assist with training initiatives or procedural updates relating to discovery compliance and digital submissions.
  • Assist in the processing digital evidence, including video from body-worn cameras, surveillance footage, and electronic records, using platforms such as MATRIX, and Evidence.com.
  • Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS , SKILLS,  AND EXPERIENCES:

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years in a criminal law office, government agency, or litigation-focused firm.
  • Legal Knowledge & Application: Understanding of criminal law, court procedures, and discovery rules (e.g., Ohio Criminal Rule 16). Ability to apply legal concepts to real-world evidence and case documentation.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong precision in reviewing documents, identifying discrepancies, redacting sensitive information, and managing case timelines.
  • Ethical Judgment & Confidentiality: Maintains strict confidentiality with sensitive materials and follows ethical standards in handling discovery and client information.
  • Time Management & Organization: Ability to handle high volumes of information and prioritize tasks to meet strict deadlines across multiple cases.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency with digital platforms used in law enforcement and prosecution (e.g., MATRIX, Evidence.com, body-worn camera footage processing).
  • Collaboration: Works well with attorneys, investigators, law enforcement, and external stakeholders while maintaining professionalism and shared accountability.
  • Communication: Clear and effective written and verbal communication

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Associate's Degree/Bachelor's degree

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The Paralegal must have an ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time while reviewing case files, conducting research, and working on a computer. Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, file handling, and operating standard office equipment (scanner, copier, etc.). The Paralegal must be able to routinely travel around the county government and courthouse complex and be present in the office during normal work hours with attendance and punctuality of particular importance. Must have the ability to lift and carry legal files, boxes of discovery materials, or digital evidence equipment weighing up to 25 pounds with, or without, an accommodation. Visual acuity to read and analyze digital and physical documents, including small font sizes and surveillance footage. Auditory ability to accurately listen to audio recordings, 911 calls, and video evidence as part of case preparation. The Paralegal generally works in an office where the noise level is usually moderate.
