Aquarium Specialist/Coral Aquaculturist (2-3 Positions Open)
House of Fins in Greenwich CT is currently looking to hire an Aquarium and Coral Specialist for our Retail Store and new Coral and Anemone Propagation Area. General tropical (Indo-Pacific) reef aquarium maintenance, propagation, and retail responsibilities will be required for this position with an extra focus on Corals. Daily responsibilities include duties such as:
- Cleaning and maintaining of saltwater fish and reef aquariums
- Monitoring the health of fish, corals and invertebrates, and medicating as necessary
- Maintaining the Fish/coral/invertebrate systems, which includes sumps, reactors, and protein skimmers.
- Monitoring display tanks and coral farm for pests and algae
- Maintaining appropriate lighting (PAR levels), and water flow in reef aquaria
- Water testing and dosing to maintain proper water parameters
- Preparing food portions and feeding Fish, inverts, and corals as necessary
- Proactively improve coral and fish systems
- Potentially ordering corals, fish, and invertebrates for the retail store from several wholesalers weekly
- Identifying corals, fish, and inverts as shipments come into the shop and placing as appropriate in display tanks
- Pricing and posting animals
- Assisting customers with their reef aquariums in a high-end retail environment
Qualifications:
- Passion for saltwater and reef aquaria
- Experience being customer-facing and personable, preferably in a retail environment
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology or other Environmental Science and/or SEVERAL years experience maintaining personal tropical reef aquariums
- Experience with keeping salt water warm water coral systems
- Applicant must possess a thorough knowledge of disease recognition, daily saltwater fish and reef aquarium husbandry, food preparation, nutrition, and water quality
- The ability to identify fish and coral species and advise on care and compatibility
- The ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds is necessary
This job requires working Saturdays and Sundays (there will be opportunities for some weekends off during the year, but applicants should be prepared to work most weekend days)
