Library Career Exploration Intern

Internship Title: Library Career Exploration Intern

Current Project Title: Varies, depending on desired job pathway

Direct supervisor: UW-Parkside Library staff

Estimated hours per week: 7-8

Number of students anticipated to hire: 1

Pay rate: $1000 stipend for approximately 90 hours of work.
 

High Impact Practice Statement: By incorporating classroom learning into hands-on work experiences as well as providing supervision and coaching, students gain necessary tools to grow and contribute as professionals.
 

This internship project provides library/archives/publishing/museum career exploration opportunities to the student, by exposing them to the many considerations and practices that comprise one of three possible paths:

General Academic Librarianship: This internship will give you a sense of the work of academic libraries regarding collections, reference and instruction, space and facilities, outreach, and technology. The intern may work in many areas, relevant to their and the library’s needs and goals.

Archives and Records Management: This internship focuses on local historical records and university records, on collecting, arranging, describing, and preserving them, in many formats—print, analog audio-visual, digital. The intern may provide access to community and campus users. 

Library Outreach, Events, and Marketing: The intern will focus on helping the library host events in the semester for campus and possibly community. Duties may include planning, marketing, managing social media, and staffing events, depending on needs. The intern will also be briefly introduced to many library functions.

The intern will collaborate with librarians, archivists, and student staff in the archives and library and may also have minor customer service work in the archives with campus and community members. 

The intern will have to lift up to ten pounds, carry, navigate shelves, reach, use fine motor skills, cutting and folding tools and nontoxic chemicals. Standard MS Office and email skills are sufficient.

The broader internship context includes appropriate readings plus reflective and research writing assignments.

 

The intern must enroll for internship credit at UW-Parkside, either within their own department or by enrolling in UWP 494: Cross-Disciplinary Internship.

Qualifications and Other Considerations

  • Year in school: Sophomore and above
  • GPA: in good standing
  • Availability: The weekly hours must occur between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. M-F
  • Must provide agreement from UW-Parkside instructor responsible for supervising academic internship
