Intern (Information Technology - GIS)

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is seeking a motivated student or recent graduate eager to gain practical experience and create valuable connections in the field of information technology. Join our dynamic Application Development and Support department at SCAG for an enriching paid internship opportunity where you will participate in a wide variety of entry level professional, analytical, and administrative functions. The selected intern will help support our IT GIS team in many ways. Some of those include assisting with building GIS applications, system administration, and GIS user support. Others includedocumentation, assisting with creating Service Now Knowledge Basearticles and supporting general GIS administrative tasks. Join us in a growth-oriented environment where you can hone your skills and make a meaningful impact on your career trajectory!  

The Application Development and Support department is responsible for many of SCAG's core technology systems and involved in multiple SCAG initiatives. The team develops, manages, tests, supports, maintains, and consults on applications including region shaping metropolitan planning systems, operationally focused finance and support systems, and public facing information sharing systems. Some of the current applications and technologies used include Microsoft Great Plains (GP), WorkPlace, OnBase, Microsoft CRM, custom Inter-Government Review (IGR), custom Finance Management Systems (FMS), Azure DevOps, Microsoft Dynamics 365, ESRI ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, ServiceNow, Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and Crystal Reports. This role is planned to primarily focus on the GIS applications in this portfolio.

Internships will begin approximately mid-Julyand will be limited to a maximum of 29 hours a week for the duration of the internship (750 hours). Interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week.


SALARY

Interns’ salary will depend on their in-progress or highest completed degree:

Interns working toward or who possess a Bachelor’s degree will start at $21 per hour

Interns working toward or who possess a Master’s degree will start at $24 per hour

In this role you can expect to

 

Learn and assist with enterprise GIS applications, system administration, and GIS project support.

Support structuring GIS system documentation and knowledge-based article documentation in an easy to reference manner.

Assist with creating Service Now Knowledge Base articles.

Assist the team in supporting tier 1 support ticketsto resolve issues from staff such as assigning GIS licenses and providing access to users on respective systems.

Assistwith developing important GIS meeting agendas and coordinating with users, vendors, and consultants.

Work collaboratively on GIS-related projects.

Perform other duties as assigned.  

 

What you'll bring to this role

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in a university or community college taking classes toward Information Technology, Project Management, Business, Communications, or a related field, or who has graduated within the previous 12 months.  

 

We’ll be a great match if you also have: 

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Basic understanding of GIS principles, spatial analysis, and mapping tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).

Basic knowledge of data management, geospatial data visualization, and scripting (Python, SQL).

Strong organizational and multitasking skills.

Ability to manage time effectively, work independently and take initiative.

Strong attention to detail.

Strong analytical thinking skills.

Experience using Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint.)
