Recreation Specialist

Job Title: Recreation Specialist
Reports To: Recreation Programming Specialist
Supervises: None
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

I. Purpose of Job

Under general supervision, the Recreation Specialist assists in the facilitation of Maury County Parks & Recreation programs offered to the public at various parks and facilities operated by Maury County.

 

II. Essential Job Duties
 

A. Facilitates recreational activities and programs occurring in the parks and recreational facilities.

Assists with supervision of participants utilizing parks and recreational facilities.

Prepares facilities for programs, classes, and special events and ensures the proper coordination of staff and space to accommodate all activities.

Checks in program participants, passes out materials, provides instructions, etc.

Works with maintenance staff in preparing facilities before and after programs.

Ensures setup of tables and chairs, materials necessary for program, etc.

Leads small group day camp programs and other educational and outreach activities.

Enforces governing policies and maintains order at all times

 

B. Assists with development and implementation of various programs.

Assists with planning and coordinating special events and activities including outdoor educational programs, workshops, day camps, guided hikes, movie nights, providing interpretation to visitors, and special events.

Assists with recruitment of temporary workers and volunteers.
 

C. Assists with advertising and promoting parks and recreation events and activities.

Assists with maintaining parks and recreation events and activities information on website and social media.

Assists with distributing press releases, calendars, and newsletters.
 

D. Performs Administrative Functions

Assists with preparing and maintaining recreation center files and records.

Prepares reports of scheduled and completed activities.

Prepares and maintains program information, schedules, rosters, files, and records.


III. Other Job Duties

Performs other job duties as assigned.

Work some weekends and/or after normal business hours as needed.

Light maintenance of workspace, storage space, and programming supplies.
 

IV. Primary Job Challenges

Primary challenges of this position include dealing with keeping program participants engaged, supervising inattentive participants, and correcting participants, particularly with regard to safety issues.
 

V. Equipment Operated

Office and communications equipment, parks vehicle/UTV, projection equipment.
 

VI. Key Competencies Required

Job Content Knowledge:

Must have thorough knowledge of recreation programming and operations, strong organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills, and thorough knowledge of the health and safety regulations governing public parks and recreation facilities.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.

Ability to perform these operations using units of money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out multi-step instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems by choosing from several known choices with frequent reliance on how problems were dealt with before.

Teamwork: Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.
 

VII. Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:

Frequently stand or walk for extended periods.

Regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel.

Regularly reach with hands and arms.

Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.

Frequently sit.

The work environment will vary between indoors and outdoors. It may be moderately noisy, and incumbent will be exposed to various weather conditions and be required to traverse uneven terrain.
 

VIII. Qualifications

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of HS diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred) and experience working with the public.
 

Required Certifications/Licenses:

Valid Tennessee Driver’s License
 

Preferred Certifications/Licenses:

Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP)

Tennessee Naturalist

CPR, First Aid and AED for the professional rescuer
