Mechanical/ Materials Engineer - Image Processing and Visualization of Additive Manufacturing Process and Experiment Results -3288
Project Title: Image Processing and Visualization of Additive Manufacturing Process and Experiment Results PREP0003238
Project Plan: Understanding how metal powders perform in additive manufacturing (AM) systems and how those powders change over time is critical to industry practitioners making decisions about the usability and re-usability of metal powders. NIST is conducting research to characterize the flow, spreading, and mixing of metal AM powders. The PREP associate will support the generation, analysis, and reporting of additive manufacturing research results obtained jointly with NIST Engineering Laboratory (EL) personnel. This includes generation of high-resolution images and high-speed videos of metal powder spreading, carrying out data analysis, and compilation of informative videos to accompany experiment results datasets. The contractor shall also support process measurement
experiments related to additive manufacturing processes by calibrating and benchmarking commercial high-speed camera to enable imaging on NIST additive manufacturing testbeds.
The work will entail:
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Operating applicable systems of the NIST powder spreading testbed to conduct various experiments in powder spreading.
- Developing and improving operating procedures, data management, and data processing pipeline for the NIST powder spreading testbed.
- Design and installation of overhead imaging system with bright field and dark field lighting configurations for NIST powder spreading testbed.
- Preparation of datasets, reports, and figures of powder spreading experiments for technical publications .
Qualifications
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related field,
- Familiarity with laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing process
- 10 years experience in instrumentation, data acquisition, and image analysis
- Demonstrated experience with image processing techniques for particle tracking or particle image velocimetry (PIV)
- Demonstrated experience with high speed imaging instruments and data processing
- Ability to work well in a team
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
