The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Maintenance, District 2, has a full-time vacancy for a Welder Mechanic I.

Summary:  Schedules repair assignments and fabrications in the welding shop to keep the District operations functioning in a productive and safe way.

 

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education. 
 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education in a related mechanical trade.

 

Experience: One (1) year of experience as a welder. Each additional year of approved work experience as a welder may be substituted for one (1) year of required formal education.

 

OR

 

Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential and completion of apprenticeship training (6,000 hours) as a welder.

 

Experience: No experience.

 

License/Certification: Must possess a valid New Hampshire driver’s license. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with airbrake endorsements OR obtain such licensure prior to completion of the one (1) year probationary period. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have a telephone and be available 24 hours a day. Adept with oxygen-acetylene welding procedures as well as the AC/DC manual electrode, and knowledgeable with as least one other type of welding, preferably MIG. All accountabilities must be performed in accordance with State and Department rules and policies, including risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations and administrative orders.

RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Repairs and maintains the District and garage-owned equipment as necessary to mInimize operational downtime.
  • Performs fabrication and modification of District designed equipment to increase operational efficiency and safety.
  • Supervises the scheduling and timely fabrication and installation of plow mounting equipment on privately owned trucks to provide proper snow removal capabilities and protect the structural and operational integrity of the vehicle.
  • Consults with equipment and material suppliers for technical data and state of the art welding supplies, procedures and hydraulic equipment to improve equipment efficiency and safety.
  • Maintains District inventory and disbursement of hot and cold rolled steel and welding supplies to ensure an adequate supply at the patrol sections.
  • Reports observed safety and environmental hazards and violations to supervisory personnel.
  • Operates 2 and 3 axle trucks, tractors with loaders and backhoes, and related highway equipment to provide all season safe conditions on assigned highways.
  • Responds immediately to perform winter maintenance and other traffic emergency activities as needed on a 24-hour per day basis, throughout entire year.
  • Supervises temporarily assigned welders, mechanics and tradesmen.
