Junior Sailing Director

Mentor Harbor Yachting Club seeks a dynamic, mature individual with boating and instructional experience to serve as the Junior Activities Program Director. This position primarily oversees a summer boating camp held at the yacht club for members' children, grandchildren, and members of the broader Northeast Ohio community. From sailing, powerboating and paddleboarding to swimming, pickleball and general outdoor fun, MHYC junior programs are designed to create excitement and experience on, in and around the water. The programs include a 5-week day camp (9a-5p), a 1-week beginner boating camp (10a-2p). Tuesday night program from 5-7p, and a race team that travels on the weekend with coach and parent support. The expectations and requirements are outlined below.

This position reports to MHYC General Manager & MHYC Jr. Activities Committee.

Required Certifications 

• High School Diploma/GED, and either a College Degree or advanced professional training related to boating or sailing instruction. 

• Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation (towing capacity preferred). 

• Certified US SAILING INSTRUCTOR (Level 2, Level 3 Head Instructor preferred). Certification can be completed prior to June 1 and ongoing). 

• NASBLA/Ohio Boaters License. 

• Certified US Powerboat Safe Handling Certification or other powerboat training 

• First Aid/CPR certification. 

Preferred Experience 

• Mature individual who likes to teach and work with children. 

• 2-3 years teaching sailing or boating to youths preferred. 

• Sailing or boating camp experience preferred but not required. 

• Administrative Experience & Professional Abilities 

• General mature demeanor and manners while interacting with adults and parents. • Practical experience or academic training in working among ages 7-22 years, in a leadership capacity. 

• Effective communication skills, good character, positive outlook, patient, flexible, problem solver, good people skills and comfortable with public speaking. 

• Organized and responsible. 

• Able to lead by example and explicitly give good instructions. 

• Able to accept supervision, instruction and recommendations by superiors and comfortable communication with them daily about any issue that arises. MHYC Crow's Nest Junior Sailing Program Director Job Description 

• Experience with children's activities; games, team building, and arts or crafts. 

• Familiarity with Google Drive and various telephone Apps used by the program. 

Time commitment 

Must be available for 8-10 weeks, mid-May - August. 

Part-time Requirements: May 18 - June 7, week of July 14-18. 

Full-time Requirements: June 9 - August 1, including Camp Sleepover. 

Remote work: 40-80 hours August - May 

Required Presence: Parent Meeting (April), Planning Week (Boat Prep & Staff Orientation (after Memorial Day), Camp Days, Banquet, Instructor Debriefing & Pack up (Post Camps) 

Compensation 

Pay is commensurate with experience and training, with opportunity to earn a bonus. 

General Skills Required 

• Able to work cooperatively with the MHYC General Manager, Controller & Staff, MHYC Jr. Activities Chair & Committee members. Able to work independently on administrative tasks like logistics, planning and reporting. 

• Able to work effectively as a leader and relate to the Instructor Team to inspire teamwork. Observe sailing and instructional activities and offer constructive feedback and motivation to the instructors. 

• Able to work professionally as the customer service representative for all parental communications. 

• Proficient use of personal laptop for all email communications, creation of documents in Google drive through the MHYCsailcamp@gmail.com account as well as creation and monitoring of all registration, orders, and billing in The Club Spot account. 

• Use the Crows Nest Sail Camp Guide & Curriculum to oversee and ensure a safe, fun and educational sailing experience for youths aged 7 through 17 years. Maintain & organize camp records (Attendance Rosters, Lesson Plans, Injury Reports) for past 7 years. 

• Professional and educated demeanor in all interactions and communications specifically parents (clients) and staff (management). 

• Manage and problem-solving skills in any altercations, injuries, accidents and disciplinary actions. Contact parents of all parties involved including instructors' parents. 

• Maintain Boat Logs & Accident Reports for all boats and enforce staff's responsibility in this area. 

Job Responsibilities 

Pre-Season Duties 

Registration: Plan summer schedule with Jr. Chair, Create and maintain registration in Clubspot.com, Coordinate with Jr. Committee on pricing & structure, registration promotion and MHYC Crows Nest Junior Sailing Program Director Job Description monitoring, response to parent emails. Coordinate with Jr. Chair organization of Parent Informational Meeting 

Hiring: Assist with Instructor interviews, Post & Review Applications, Schedule & Conduct Interviews, Schedule US Sailing, and CPR courses as needed, Coordinate with Jr Chair/Council on Offer letters and Pay structure, send out Offer Letters to Instructors & invite them to Parent Info Meeting 

Set up: Mid-May (weekends or weeknights) begin setting up teen room & spin room, oversee race team getting 420s off wracks and cleaned Oversee Certification courses when applicable, plan and execute Instructor orientation, order Instructor Shirts and camp shirts. 

Billing: Work directly with MHYC Controller to ensure all families have paid or have been charged for the correct amount. 

Instructor Orientation: Employee Paperwork (passport needed), Policies & expectations, Contract, Time Clock & Payroll, Lesson Plans, Skill up App, wash all powerboats & test. In-Season Duties 

Schedule: Arrive by 8:15am to open building and prepare for the day 

8:30am - Instructor Briefing - weather, schedule, Weekly/Daily lesson plans 

8:50am - Begin Check in at the gate 

9:15am - Morning Lessons begin 

1pm - Lunch ends & Afternoon lessons begin 

3:15pm - All boats should be returning to the dock 

3:45pm - Fleet Debrief & pack up 

4pm - Instructor Debrief 

4:30pm Instructor clock out. 

6pm Finish up day’s records, emails, communications with MHYC management etc. Walk through boats & sheds to make sure everything is shipshape and locked. 

Daily: Get to know all campers and with the assistance of the Instructor Team, keep them safe and strive to meet their needs. Know who needs to leave early, who is taking medicine, who can NOT have their photo used for publicity and be sure staff is aware of these special needs. Enforce the rules, policies, goals and traditions of the program. All boats must be out of the water every evening. You are responsible for the physical facility of the clubhouse. Be sure the entire staff reinforces this rule. Clean up at the end of day and lock/secure the building and gate. Plan & execute weekly full camp excursions, field trips or activities. Get Purchase approval and make any necessary purchases to the functionality of the program. 

Oversight: Observe and mentor all instructors and train them to use Skill Up, Weather apps and Lesson plans. Review weekly payroll and submit edits to MHYC Controller. Conduct Mid-season reviews to have an open opportunity to make changes or communicate issues. Work with the Head Instructor in managing the day to day operations of the program and be willing to accept responsibilities that are necessary for the good of the camp. Support Maintenance Manager in maintenance process such as purchase approval & ordering replacement parts and scheduling service calls. MHYC Crow's Nest Junior Sailing Program Director Job Description 

SIGN IN/OUT: Ensure that campers are being picked up by responsible and authorized adults or guardians. If this duty is delegated to an adult volunteer, be sure they understand this process. 

Safety: You are in charge of ALL medical situations. Know where campers are at all times. Use VHF radio for communication with instructors, fleets and Head Instructor. Have fleet assignments handy. Follow medical procedures with documentation and notify parent/guardian and maintain excellent Injury reports. Go out on the water when additional safety boats or rescues are needed. 

Vendors: Ordering Instructor shirts, Camp t-shirt designers & Printers, Merchandise orders & vendors, overseeing camper photos, ordering trophies and Instructor gifts, organizing Camp Sleepover & Banquet. 

Race Team: You are a mentor and manager to the Head Race Team Coach though they should be able to operate without significant oversight. Maintain a check out system for all boats and equipment that leave for regattas and ensure that they are returned after the regatta. Additional Programs It is your responsibility to ensure that the weather is safe and the Instructors are scheduled, prepared and set for their lessons. Check the weather beforehand and cancel per your judgement. If you are not present, there must be a Level 2 Instructor assigned to On-Shore Safety (give them additional tasks to complete during their scheduled time). SOS is Tuesday night from 5-7pm. Powerboat courses, Private Lessons and Open Sail Rental Sessions can be scheduled outside of the Jr. Sailing Program schedule per Instructor availability. You may consider hiring a night/weekend manager to oversee these programs if the budget allows. 

Post-season Duties 

Instructor Debrief: Organize and execute the end of the season remarks, Conduct Instructor Exit Interviews, wash all powerboats, pack any boats that need to be put away, organize sheds and clean the Teen & Spinnaker rooms. 

Billing: Coordinate directly with MHYC Controller to ensure ALL program fees, merchandise and lunches have been paid. 

Final Pack Up: Work with any available Instructors to: Clean & winterize all powerboats, pack up and haul Breeze, get all masts in the and all boats on racks and tied down. 

Management Debrief: Meet with MHYC general Manager and Junior Activities Chair to review any pending discussions, incidents and feedback as well as create a tentative plan for the following year
