Position Summary:
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is seeking a compassionate and qualified School Counselor to provide comprehensive guidance services in the areas of academic, personal/social, and career development. The counselor plays a key role in promoting student success, addressing student needs proactively, and supporting a positive school climate through both preventative programming and responsive services.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver individual and group counseling to support academic, career, and personal/social growth
Assist students with problem-solving, decision-making, goal setting, and coping strategies
Support academic planning, course selection, and transitions between school levels
Utilize student data, assessments, and career tools to guide student planning and success
Respond to student and family needs through timely intervention and referrals
Collaborate with families, staff, and community partners to support student well-being
Promote a respectful and inclusive school climate, addressing diversity and equity
Maintain accurate documentation and adhere to ethical standards of confidentiality
Coordinate and implement guidance curriculum and prevention programs
Participate in professional development and align practices with district and state standards
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid or eligible Alaska Type C Special Services Certificate with a school counseling endorsement
Recent experience relevant to school counseling (may include teaching, practicum, or counseling work)
Knowledge of child/adolescent development and counseling strategies
Familiarity with Section 504/ADA procedures and student support protocols
Strong communication and human relations skills
Ability to build rapport with students, families, and staff
Proficiency with technology tools related to counseling and student data
Preferred Skills:
Experience with middle or high school students
Understanding of school-wide support systems and community-based resources
Ability to support diverse populations and foster an inclusive environment
