Trade Compliance Intern
Job Purpose :
As a Trade Compliance intern, you will assist in ensuring compliance with international trade laws and regulations, focusing on tasks like document verification, data entry, and research, under the guidance of senior staff.
You will assist in preparation and verification of documentation used in international trade, such as commercial invoices, proforma invoices, packing list, bills of lading, shipper’s letter of instruction, and Free Trade Agreement certificates of origin.
Additionally, you will assist senior staff conducting classification of products under the US Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) by entering product data into global classification systems and gathering information required for said classification from internal databases and working directly with Progress Rail engineers, buyers and our suppliers.
You will communicate with internal Progress Rail teams in the US and internationally, along with external stakeholders, such as US Customs brokers and freight forwarders to ensure compliant cross border actives.
Finally, you will assist Progress Rail with auditing import and export transactions and help maintain records required under various Federal Regulations.
During your internship, you will gain valuable experience in US trade compliance, how international supply chains operate, learn US Customs regulations and best trade compliance practices.
Key Job Elements :
• Support U.S. export documentation processing;
• Support HTSUS/ECCN Classification process to include request uploads, technical drawing retrieval, and coordination of communication between technical team and CAT TCOE team members;
• Support Trade Compliance Record-keeping. This will include communication with and retrieval of documents from Freight Forwarders and Customs Brokers. Additionally, activity will include management of electronic documentation received from providers via FTP process;
• Process information requests from Customs Brokers and other third-party vendors supporting international trade compliance functions;
• Support Free Trade Agreement Solicitation Process. This will include maintaining supplier contact information, communication with suppliers for part certifications and other supporting documentation, maintaining database of part status.
Education/Training :
• Currently progressing towards a bachelor’s degree in Business, Foreign trade, International relations, or related.
Qualifications & Experience :
• High level of analytical ability and strong research skills (identify and anticipate issues);
• Intermediate to advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications;
• Excellent communication skills, ability to work with employees at different levels within the Rail Division and Service Providers’ organizations.
