Position: Zookeeper Intern
To be successful as a Sanctuary keeper, you should be ultra-observant and able to manage animals without being indecisive. Outstanding candidates are hardworking, driven by passion, and unafraid to get their hands dirty. At Chase, our keepers take on several different responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Educate the public about animals, which may include delivering spirited presentations, demonstrations, lectures and informative tours.
- Inspiring and providing training to new staff and volunteers.
- Deliver and record the results of behavioral enrichment activities.
- Coordinate with other Zookeepers and build professional networks.
- Provide supervision, guidance and mentorship of the activities of Keeper-aide volunteers and interns in their tasks as assigned at the sanctuary.
- Work without close supervision. Exercise sound judgment in analyzing emergency situations. Follow all safety guidelines and policies during general duties as well as in emergency situations.
- On your own or with other Keepers perform all day to day duties required to deliver excellent animal care.
- Monitoring, observing, and protecting all animals in your charge.
- Cleaning, disinfection and maintenance of animal habitats, play areas and grounds.
- Maintenance and repair of animal habitats, play areas, grounds, shelters and dens.
- Observation and monitoring of animal behavior and physiology.
- Provide recommendations concerning exhibit modification which would improve breeding potential, visitor experience and general well-being of the animals.
- Capture and restraint of animals as necessary for treatment, general husbandry or transport.
- Operating trucks, tractors and other machinery as necessary.
- Participate in fundraising activities to help sustain the sanctuary. (15% bonus on all you bring in)
- Be a positive team member who helps maintain a drama free environment.
- Attend required weekly office meetings
Requirements
- 4 year degree/degree seeking in Zoology, Animal Sciences or related field
- 40 hour work week
- Commitment of at least 2 months
- Immunizations- Tetanus, Covid (exceptions may be granted)
Opportunities
- Free on-site housing may be available. A small weekly stipend will be provided.
- Hands-on experience with critically endangered primates including the Ruffed lemur and Cotton-top Tamarin.
- Work with over 15 unique species of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
- Observe lemurs in our large outdoor electronets, providing the animals a safe means to explore their habitats as well as an intimate look at lemur behavior for our interns and staff.
