WHO ARE WE
The Texas Department of Agriculture has regulatory and marketing responsibilities and administers more than 50 separate laws. Current duties include promoting Texas agricultural products locally, nationally and internationally; assisting in the development of the agribusiness industry in Texas; regulating the sale, use and disposal of pesticides and herbicides; controlling destructive plant pests and diseases; and ensuring the accuracy of all weighing or measuring devices (like grocery scales) used in commercial transactions.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Intern for the Executive Office will assist with support on multiple projects for the division. You will learn what it takes to run the day-to-day operations of a governmental agency. You will work under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with providing administrative support for the agency’s executive staff.
Assist with the preparation of the annual Family Land and Heritage program including event planning duties.
Participate in staff meetings and attend meetings/functions, as requested.
Follow all TDA policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - External
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION
Enrollment in a college, university, or graduate program or a recent graduate with a minimum grade point average of 3.0*.
Completion of at least 60 credit hours*.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Enrollment in a college, university, or graduate program or a recent graduate with a minimum grade point average of 3.0* and major coursework in Political Science, Public Administration, Agriculture, or related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of office procedures; of spelling, punctuation, and grammar; and of business or program terminology, methods, and procedures.
Skill in the use of a computer and office equipment; and providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers.
Ability to prepare and maintain records, files, and reports; to transfer stock from one location to another; and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and exercise sound judgment and discretion.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer and may require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed. May be required to travel, which will include overnight. May involve travel (up to 5%), occasionally overnight.
