TITLE: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree and endorsements in special education, elementary, secondary or special education administration.
- South Dakota administrator certificate.
- A minimum of 3 years of successful teaching experience in a special education classroom and a minimum of 2 years of successful administrative experience are preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with community groups, parents, and agencies.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and maintain confidentiality.
- Adhere to the district's policies and procedures.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To provide leadership in development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of Special Services Programs for the Brookings School District.
PHYSICAL FUNCTION:
Up and down motion in the office; bending; stretching; and lifting up to 20 pounds. Mobility in and around the office/school area. Constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination. Frequent walking, keyboarding, speaking, writing, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, reaching, stooping, and turning.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee special services programs and outcomes.
- Communicate with parents on unique special education issues and situations.
- Support building administrators to ensure compliance with each individualized education plan.
- Meet with special services staff on a regular basis to disseminate information, discuss professional learning topics and resolve current challenges.
- Identify staffing allocations based on student needs and assist the building administrators in hiring and evaluating special education staff.
- Collaborate with the superintendent, directors, and building administrators to address challenges related to special services programs and students.
- Monitor and submit appropriate reports for the Department of Education; stay informed of federal and state laws and pending legislation to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Provide information to the school board and district patrons through presentations and the district website.
- Work with district directors and building administrators to coordinate the provision of specialized materials, curriculum, technology, transportation, and accommodations to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
- Assist with the development and preparation of the department budget and fulfill requirements for funding with the Department of Education.
- Arrange professional learning opportunities for staff to enhance their knowledge and skills in serving students with disabilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Contract will consist of 260 days.
EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
This position will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent.
