Volunteer Services Intern

Internship opportunity with The New York Botanical Garden

This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City Internships program and is available only to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill who will be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship. Students enrolled in other schools at Fordham or who will graduate or transfer before the internship end date are not eligible.

Volunteer Services Intern

15-20 hours/week

In-person

Start Date: June 10th

End Date: August 14th

Stipend: $3300, distributed directly by Fordham in two equal installments of $1650 shortly after the midpoint and end date of your assignment.

The New York Botanical Garden is an advocate for the plant world. The Garden pursues its mission through its role as a museum of living plant collections arranged in gardens and landscapes across its National Historic Landmark site; through its comprehensive education programs in horticulture and plant science; and through the wide-ranging research programs of the International Plant Science Center.

The Volunteer Services Intern will support programming and operations for a number of volunteer and intern programs throughout the summer. This includes the opportunity to develop educational and public program experience, build administrative experience, and foster leadership skills while working with younger interns.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This intern will:

  • Curate a weekly volunteer-run Multi-Sensory table for the public with live and dried plant materials and interactive handouts.
  • Help two high school Jr. Tour Guides prepare to lead original tours for their peers through feedback, practice, and research support.
  • Help Manager for Volunteer Services prepare for volunteer and intern events, including set up and break down.
  • Incorporate incoming intern records into NYBG databases.
  • Attend volunteer and intern trainings, and other professional development opportunities throughout the summer

QUALIFICATIONS

An applicant for this position should have an interest in museums, environmental education, and/or youth development. The ideal candidate is:

  • Comfortable working with other people
  • Has good organizational skills
  • Is passionate about learning
