Pima County Health Department (PCHD) is offering twelve (12) paid summer internship positions of up to 400 hours each, providing aspiring public health professionals with valuable hands-on experience. This grant-funded temporary position represents one of those twelve (12) internship opportunities. The internship will run from 5/27/2025 - 7/31/2025. For students seeking academic credit with this internship, an active Affiliation Agreemen1 between the academic institution and Pima County Health Department must already be established. Housing will be offered to students for the duration of the internship. 


The Community Mental Health and Addiction (CMHA) Division is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented intern to support the Injury and Violence Prevention team. This role offers a unique and meaningful opportunity to analyze data related to unintentional injury, violence, mental health, public safety, and harm reduction. You will work with complex and highly sensitive information related to self-harm, overdose, firearm use and motor vehicle crashes, all while contributing to prevention strategies that can positively impact individuals and communities. This internship provides the chance to be a part of a dedicated team devoted to addressing some of the most pressing challenges in Pima County, while gaining hands-on experience in data-analysis, prevention efforts, and public health collaborations. 

 

This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.

 

Essential Functions:

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in Public Health, Health Policy, Epidemiology, or related level degree program. Must have a Bachelor's degree from a four-year institution. Must commit to 400 hours between the dates of 5/27-7/31/25.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):  

  • Completed advanced coursework in environmental health topics (e.g., toxicology, epidemiologic methods, advanced food safety, vector-borne diseases). 
  • Experience handling and interpretating complex data sets, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or more advanced data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, or Python). 
  • Experience in generating reports, literature reviews, or presentations that integrate data-driven insights. 
  • Experience with/knowledge in conducting field assessments, collecting samples, or performing onsite inspections in an environmental health context. 
  • Experience with/knowledge in regulatory frameworks and the ability to apply public health guidelines or best practices. 
  • Experience with developing training materials, delivering presentations, or coordinating workshops. 
  • Experience leading collaborative projects, mentor less-experienced team members (e.g., undergraduate interns), and engage with stakeholders professionally.
  • Experience in evaluating and shaping environmental health policies, including vector management protocols or advanced food safety interventions. 
  • Experience with/knowledge of proposing or testing novel approaches to community-based health challenges, backed by robust data and research. 
  • Experience balancing multiple tasks effectively, ensuring high-quality deliverables under deadlines. 
  • Experience with record-keeping, and adherence to ethical and regulatory standards. 

 

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
