Pima County Health Department (PCHD) is offering twelve (12) paid summer internship positions of up to 400 hours each, providing aspiring public health professionals with valuable hands-on experience. These grant-funded temporary positions represent one of those twelve (12) internship opportunities. The internship will run from 5/27/2025 - 7/31/2025. For students seeking academic credit with this internship, an active Affiliation agreement between the academic institution and Pima County Health Department must already be established. Housing will be offered to students for the duration of the internship.

 

The intern will conduct detailed field assessments and analyze vector control data to develop targeted interventions, integrating broader environmental health principles. Lead and support complex inspections, coordinate multi-facility violation data reviews, and propose data-driven improvements or research projects. Create specialized training curricula, mentor junior interns, and collaborate with academic and community partners to enhance environmental health initiatives. 

 

This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.

Minimum Qualifications:
 

Must be enrolled in a four-year degree programs as a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior majoring in Environmental Health, Public Health, Health Policy, Epidemiology or related fields. Must commit to 400 hours between the dates of 5/27-7/31/25.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):  

  • Experience with/knowledge of foundational coursework in biology, chemistry, or basic environmental health principles. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, or similar software for data entry, aggregation, and basic analysis. 
  • Experience with digital tools for record-keeping and reporting (e.g., online databases or learning management systems). 
  • Experience with written and verbal communication skills to assist with field inspections, create simple educational materials, and participate in team discussions. 
  • Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with supervisors, peers, and community partners. 
  • Experience with/knowledge in vector control, food safety standards, and public health strategies. 
  • Experience with participating in both fieldwork (site visits) and office-based tasks (data organization and analysis). 
  • Experience with following inspection checklists, accurately documenting observations, and maintaining detailed records. 
  • Experience with identifying potential environmental risks and adherence to established protocols. 

 

Selection Procedure

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
