Engineering Intern/Co-op (6-months)

SiNAPTIC is seeking a detail-oriented Engineering Intern/ Co-op for a 6-month opportunity to assist with the development and qualification of materials and equipment for 3D printing of technical ceramics. The position will be full-time in person over the summer then switch to part time with a minimum 20hr requirement during the fall semester. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to follow precise instructions. This role will perform testing, inspections, investigations and maintain accurate records in accordance with SiNAPTIC requirements and communicating findings with relevant teams. 

 

The intern will also be training in printing and processing parts utilizing our 3D printing technology including, setting up and operating printers as well as post-process cleaning of the parts to pre-established guidelines and specifications to meet customer requirements. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

 

  • Conducting research and development activities related to ceramics
  • Analyze and testing the properties of ceramics to ensure they meet specific requirements
  • Collaborating with other engineers and scientists to develop new products and improve existing ones
  • Maintain safe ceramic lab working environment
  • Utilize mechanical testing frames to perform product testing.
  • Utilize hand measuring tools such as calipers or micrometers, as well as perform functionality and/or dimensional checks on components.
  • Read and interpret technical prints, drawings, and production specifications, including GD&T.
  • Perform inspections using digital optical machines.
  • Perform testing and inspection activities such as functionality, dimensional checks, etc.
  • Clean work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Create 3D models and drawings of components and/or customer parts
  • Crosstrain and support multiple areas of production including:
    • Operate 3D printing equipment with direction from production and engineering.
    • Post-processing of printed parts – removal, cleaning, and preparation for thermal processing or final inspection.
  • Follow policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineer, Mechanical Engineering or similar degree program
  • Ability to self-manage, prioritize initiatives, and take ownership in resolving issues with urgency and vigor.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics for parts.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds several times per day.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D modeling program
  • Experience with technical ceramics
  • Familiarity with inspection tools and techniques
  • Experience with additive manufacturing
