Pima County Health Department (PCHD) is offering twelve (12) paid summer internship positions of up to 400 hours each, providing aspiring public health professionals with valuable hands-on experience. The grant-funded temporary position represents one of those twelve (12) internship opportunities. The internship will run from 5/27/2025 - 7/31/2025. For students seeking academic credit with this internship, an active Affiliation Agreement between the academic institution and Pima County Health Department must already be established. Housing will be offered to students for the duration of the internship. 

 

The Community Mental Health and Addiction (CMHA) Division is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented intern to support the Injury and Violence Prevention team. This role offers a unique and meaningful opportunity to analyze data related to unintentional injury, violence, mental health, public safety, and harm reduction. You will work with complex and highly sensitive information related to self-harm, overdose, firearm use, and motor vehicle crashes, all while contributing to prevention strategies that can positively impact individuals and communities. This internship provides the chance to be a part of a dedicated team devoted to addressing some of the most pressing challenges in Pima County, while gaining hands-on experience in data-analysis, prevention efforts, and public health collaborations.  

 

This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.
 

Essential Functions:

Minimum Qualifications:


Must be enrolled in graduate school with an institution that has an active affiliation agreement with PCHD. Majoring in Public Health, Health Policy, Epidemiology, or related fields. Commit to intern a minimum of 400 hours between the dates of 05/27/2025 - 07/31/2025.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):  

  • Experience with/knowledge of statistical languages such as R and SAS. 
  • Experience with/knowledge of statistical analysis methods, specifically using real-world data. 
  • Experience with performing analysis tasks and taking initiative with minimal supervision. 
  • Experience with/knowledge in addressing injury and violence in the community, particularly related to, addiction, self-harm, and trauma. 
  • Experience with/knowledge in diverse populations mental health, trauma, and addiction. 
     

Selection Procedure

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
