Us: The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) is an independent state agency with regulatory authority over public utilities, insurance, state-chartered or licensed financial institutions, investment securities, retail franchising, and utility and railroad safety, as well as serving as the state’s central filing office for businesses. The SCC is also charged with administering Virginia’s health insurance marketplace. The SCC’s structure is unique. No other state has a single agency with such a broad array of regulatory responsibility.
How you’ll contribute: The Associate Bank Examiner participates in team-based examinations to assist in the evaluation of state-chartered banks’ financial condition and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. These examinations are typically conducted on-site at financial institution locations within the Commonwealth of Virginia, which requires overnight travel up to 25% of the time. An Associate Bank Examiner may reside anywhere in Virginia and works four 10-hour days Monday through Thursday.
- Assist with analysis of bookkeeping, financial statements, investment portfolios, capital, earnings, asset quality, liquidity, market risk sensitivity, and internal controls
- Assist with the review of loan files and policies, commercial loan documentation, Uniform Bank Performance Reports (UBPR), and call reports
- Assist with insider debt calculations, assessing ALLL/CECL, and participate in loan discussions
- Prepare financial and business analysis, research, schedules, and ratios to determine an institution’s financial condition, solvency, and profitability
- Document work and draft examination comments for inclusion in final examination reports
- Review routine examination reports for accuracy and participate in the correction of inadequacies
- Analyze trends in finance, general business conditions, and other related fields
- Acquire a general understanding of the BSA/AML specialty area
- Participate in professional development opportunities to advance knowledge of ever-changing financial institution laws and regulations
- Perform related work as required
Experience and Qualifications:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related field completed no later than June 2025
- Knowledge of accounting or auditing theory and practice
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial data, prepare schedules, and to create and manipulate spreadsheets in data processing software applications
- Ability to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing
- Strong organizational skills and adaptable to a changing work environment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Commission staff, industry personnel, and the general public
- Must exhibit a willingness to learn and an ability to research and apply both state and federal regulations related to state-chartered banks
- Dependability and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
- Familiarity with financial risk modeling is a plus
What you should know:
- The salary range is $51,300-$55,000.
- This is a remote job that requires Virginia residency.
- Overnight travel up to 25% is required to conduct on-site examinations.
