JOB SUMMARY 

 

The Research Internship will prepare students who are interested in developing skills in multidisciplinary research approaches to investigate and further knowledge on substance use and mental health disorders, infectious diseases, and health and well-being.  The internship program will provide opportunities in fundamental research methods, including qualitative and quantitative research methods; development and testing of behavioral interventions; ethical considerations in the conduct of human subjects research; health informatics, mHealth and telehealth to improve public health; implementation science research; healthcare services research; data collection methods; and data management and analysis. 

 

Research interns will have the opportunity to work on research projects at different phases of implementation depending on interest and experience.  Interns will play a pivotal role in the development of study materials and assessments ensuring that procedures are aligned with study protocols and IRB approved documents. Additional hands-on training may include developing a research question and proposal, conducting literature reviews, reviewing publicly available data, formulating a research hypothesis, and developing a research plan.  Furthermore, students will gain experience in recruitment, interviews and surveys, and retention methods. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Conduct literature reviews to summarize empirical studies on a health topic and identify significant gaps in scientific knowledge. 

Produce concept summary sheets to describe literature reviews and summary empirical evidence. 

Develop materials to communicate research at various phases of study design and iteration, including translating study procedures into visual workflows for pilot studies and implementation. 

Complete IRB-related training on the ethical conduct of research with human subjects, as well as Compliance-related training on State and Federal HIPAA regulations and related health policies. 

Produce educational and training materials into modules for participant recruitment. 

Assist with participant recruitment, enrollment, informed consent and retention procedures. 

Assist with participant interviews, focus groups, and surveys. 

Assist with research dissemination activities, including abstracts for presentation and manuscripts for publication. 

Prepare presentations, data summary reports and progress reports. 

Assists all members of Research staff as needed. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

 

Undergraduate or graduate students in public health, social work, psychology or any liberal arts programs, or any science program. Students from all science majors, particularly students with an interest in addiction medicine, as well as non-science majors with appropriate background and interest may apply. 

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) 

Excellent written, verbal and technical communication skills. 

Strong attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information. 

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams. 

Critical thinker and problem solver with high emotional quotient. 

Proactive and independent with the ability to take initiative. 

Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
