About Jean League Newton, AIA
Jean League Newton, AIA, was an accomplished architect and quiet community force in Macon. She trained at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in the 1940s and brought elements of the Bauhaus style to her early residential work in central Georgia. In the 1970s, Jean was a founding member and early president of the Historic Preservation Board of the Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission. Her work in this role, and in collaboration with her colleagues, was instrumental in saving much of what is now beloved in the historic neighborhoods of downtown Macon. This Historic Macon Foundation internship is made possible through the generosity of her family and friends, who remember her best for her strong sense of design, her love of both the traditional and the innovative, and the kind manner in which she interacted with others.
