Project Engineer - Utilities Systems

Summary:
Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, the Senior Project Engineer - Utilities Systems is responsible for the development and execution of capital projects related to critical infrastructure and utilities, including steam systems, compressed air, ammonia refrigeration, wastewater treatment, HVAC systems, and facility infrastructure. This role plays a key part in supporting plant reliability, energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, and the continuous improvement of IPC's production operations.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical knowledge of utility systems, project management capabilities, and a proactive, collaborative approach to problem-solving and execution.
Responsibilities:
Capital Project Management
- Develop and implement project plans for utilities-related capital and infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment with company goals and timelines.
- Lead project efforts from concept through commissioning, including scoping, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, construction, and validation.
- Monitor and control project schedules, budgets, and resources to ensure timely and cost-effective execution.
- Identify opportunities for system upgrades, efficiency improvements, and reliability enhancements in utility systems.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Work closely with operations, maintenance, environmental, safety, and quality teams to ensure alignment and minimize operational disruptions during project execution.
- Coordinate with external vendors, contractors, and engineering consultants to ensure adherence to technical specifications and IPC standards.
Technical Leadership
- Provide engineering expertise and troubleshooting support for utility systems, including steam, compressed air, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC, and wastewater.
- Conduct site inspections, condition assessments, and risk evaluations to inform project needs and priorities.
- Lead efforts to optimize existing utility infrastructure to support current and future production demands.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain thorough documentation including engineering drawings, P&IDs, project charters, cost estimates, and close-out reports.
- Ensure all projects comply with OSHA, EPA, ASHRAE, IIAR, and other applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
- Collaborate with EHS teams to support process safety management (PSM) for ammonia refrigeration and other regulated systems.
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Partner with production teams to optimize manufacturing processes through improved utility support and infrastructure reliability.
- Identify and implement energy efficiency measures and sustainability initiatives aligned with IPC's corporate objectives.
- Support the development of capital plans and budgets for utility and infrastructure systems.
- Champion a culture of safety by prioritizing incident and accident prevention, while promoting best practices in process safety and compliance.
- Take on other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall goals of the organization.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in utilities, infrastructure, or manufacturing environments (food processing preferred).
- Experience with plant utilities systems, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC, and wastewater systems is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of utility system design, operation, and maintenance.
- Proficiency in project management tools, engineering software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar), and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of industry codes and regulations (e.g., ASME, IIAR, NFPA, EPA, OSHA).
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced production environment.
- Flexibility to work in varying environmental conditions (cold or hot).
- Willingness to work beyond regular hours, including weekends, as needed.
