Job Summary:

 

This recruitment will be used to fill two full-time Temporary Biological Science Research Technician positions for the College of Forestry at Oregon State University (OSU ). These positions will be located in either Frenchglen and Seneca, Oregon.

 

This position is through OSU’s college of Forestry, with the Forest Animal Ecology Lab led by Dr. James Rivers. It exists to assist in the collection of data on bee communities in managed forests as part of an internally funded project. Positions will support field work in either the Steens Mountain Wilderness near Frenchglen, Oregon or the Malheur National Forest near Seneca, Oregon.

Key Responsibilities

 

20%: Collect wild bees using a variety of techniques (netting, traps).

 

20%: Quantify floral resources.

 

20%: Quantify nesting habitat.

 

10%: Assist with daily routine, tasks, and checklists.

 

20%: Perform daily data collection and entry.

 

7.5%: Interact and communicate with other crew members and leads in a respectful and professional manner to make sure tasks are completed.

 

2.5%: Assist with additional project-related duties as needed.

 

What You Will Need

 

Two years of college-level courses in Ecology, Biology, Botany, or Entomology; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

• Self-motivated, strong work ethic.

• Ability to work harmoniously in a group work environment and living situation.

• Ability to maintain a positive disposition under challenging field conditions.

• Proven track record of working in a safe, efficient, and cooperative manner in a team setting.

 

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• One or more seasons of field work experience.

• Experience with insect collection and identification.

• Previous experience sampling pollinators in field settings.

• Familiarity with identification of the flora of Eastern Oregon forests and/or sagebrush systems

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

Field work will consist of physically demanding work in challenging conditions (heat, cold, rain, sun, steep slopes, loose rock, logging slash, stinging insects, hazardous plants); working up to 10-hour days, including some weekends; camping for up to a week; driving on logging roads; and navigating through difficult forest terrain, likely without cell service. The ability to carry heavy gear (30+ lbs.) on steep slopes is required. Field safety training will be provided. Travel by vehicle will happen daily to sites, and field crew is responsible for getting themselves to our housing site initially.
