Custodians perform cleaning functions in assigned areas of buildings, helping to maintain a clean, healthy and safe environment for students, faculty and staff. The Custodian may act as a lead person to assigned custodial staff. Duties may also consist of floor stripping/scrubbing/refinishing, carpet shampooing and floor buffing.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide collection and disposal services for wastepaper, trash and debris and recyclable materials.
2. Vacuum carpeting, dry sweep, dust mop and damp mopping of hard surfaced floors.
3. Clean and sanitize washroom/shower room fixtures.
4. Dust, damp wipe, wash and polish furniture and fixtures using a ladder up to 6 feet tall and at times using scaffolds.
5. Use scrubbers, buffing and shampooing equipment.
6. Make beds and set up occupant rooms.
7. Moving furniture when required.
8. Clean kitchen floors according to Health Department standards, as required.
9. Shovel snow and spread ice melting compounds.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to demonstrate both reading and writing comprehension and competency skills
High School diploma or equivalent
A minimum of 6 months of cleaning experience
Ability to use manual and automatic scrubbers, buffers and shampooing equipment to perform assigned project work
For Custodian III positions, the following are also required:
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
• Ability to lead custodians in assigned tasks
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Previous cleaning experience of at least one year in an academic or health care environment is preferred.
