Position Summary (Primary Function)
The intern will be trained in and exposed to many aspects of the GSP Airport Police Department’s operations with emphasis on maintaining the Victim Advocacy resource list, outreach opportunities, and police records related searches and purging.
Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Tasks and training will consist of:
- Assist updating the Victim Advocate manual, verifying and confirming the list of resources in the local area.
- Assist with department records and purging of records, as needed.
- Assist with closing case files and filing monthly reports.
- Exposure to policing in an airport environment, secured areas, the Airport Operations Center and police dispatching.
- Assist with data entry.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
- Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a bachelor’s degree program with a regionally accredited institution.
- Must be pursuing or graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice, Behavioral Sciences, or law enforcement related field of study.
- A minimum of a 2.5 GPA on a 4-point scale at the time the application is submitted.
- Resume that includes relevant classes taken and any work history.
- Letter stating reasons for interest in the internship.
Experience Requirements
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to plan, organize, and set priorities.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in the use of a personal computer is necessary, including skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database products.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent Interpersonal skills.
- Excellent internet research skills.
- Willingness to learn police records management systems and a teachable attitude.
- Ability to multitask and make sound decisions while relaying information quickly.
Supervisory Responsibility
- None at this time.
Licenses Required
- Valid driver’s license.
Latitude/Independent Judgment/Accuracy
- Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information.
- Reasonable care for equipment/process will prevent injury/damage.
- Interns will have no police powers or authority. They will operate in a civilian capacity with limitations set for safety and security.
Working Conditions
- Physical Demand – Little physical effort required. Some light lifting, carrying, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping and kneeling requirements are necessary up to 30% of the time. Sitting required 70% of the time.
- Mental and or Visual Demands – Mental and visual demands vary with function performed. Consistent mental attention is needed to monitor workflow and respond efficiently.
- Attentiveness to work procedures will reduce potential risk of minor injury in certain work areas.
- Exposed to normal office environment and limited industrial environment.
Other Requirements
- Must be able to complete and pass a background investigation, drug screening, and physical examination as per Federal, State, and GSP Airport District requirements.
